I carry a Smith and Wesson first response knife in both sets of gear. I also carry a Columbia River M16 in my pocket.

I carry Smith it seems to be a good kinfe but i have a lot of knife because i a knife collecter.

I carry the smith and wesson first responder with spring loaded window punch and have had it almost all 8 yrs I have been in EMS. At work I carry it in a horizontal holster and then move it into my rescue gear if needed.

I carry a Winchester Folding Knife (4 inches) with thumb opening for one handed opening and it has a clip to attach it to the inside of my bunker pants pocket. (doesn't fall out)

I carry two. One in the cargo/side pocket of my BDU pants and the other in the holster with my center punch, shears, kelly clamp, gloves, etc that goes on my sam brown belt over my BDU shirt. Both of them are made by a cheap company called Maxam. I think one was $12 and one was $7. I dont carry anything I can afford to lose or have stolen. They are both quite sharp but tend to need regular honing because they dont hold an edge for very long depending on what they are used for. Both have thumb lugs for opening and I have found that they even work well with extrication gloves on and I intentionally bought both with metal handles instead of plastic. They are a little heavy but I have found through experience that they will break a car window first time every time. Like I say, I dont carry what I cant afford to lose which I why I would never spend the money on a Gerber or Benchmade. Nobody on my team would ever steal someone else's gear, but when you are bunking in a high school gym or the Superdome along with the people you are treating, things tend to wander off.

Also, switchblades, "assisted openers" and butterfly knives are illegal in the state of Illinois as is any knife carried on your person with a blade length of more than 4 and 1/2 inches.

Actually I carry multiple knives.. ( Enough to be considered a psycho) in My pocket I carry a Leatherman on My helmet hand I have a Gerber Multi tool in My Turnout Gear I carry a Kershaw and on my Side I carry a Buck 110 folder and a Gerber gator in My back pocket.. Now .. Bobby Why You carry all that cutlery??
Well its simple .. Ever been out on a Rainy cold dark Kentucky Night? Ever drop You knife or Multi Tool ? Ever Wonder how Dangerous it is to take Your eyes off of what Your doing both to You and Your patient to go looking for the damn thing after ya dropped it? well I have !!! In My experience a good 3 to 3/12 inch blade takes care of Most Firefighter EMS Rescue needs .. But when We are in Search and Rescue Mode out in the Bush I always bring My K BAR Its been a trusty tool for multiple uses ...

The CR M16 is a good knife, I also carry a Gerber Rescue Hook

Are you sure that this applies to those in the public safety arena? Double check this, most states will allow it when you are in an official capacity.

"Spring loaded knives are illegal. Even if you call them "one handed rescue knives". Now; chances are if you are operating at a scene and use one, know one says anything. You keep it safety stowed in your bunker pants.
However; if you carry this same knife on your belt or in your pocket when you are mild mannered Clark Kent, you will be in a world of hurt.
I ordered one out of Florida some years ago. It was out of a public safety equipment magazine, so I thought it was legal.
I was at the scene and as soon as the cop heard "click", he informed me that it was illegal in Illinois to possess such a knife. It has been in the "knife" drawer ever since.
Know the law. You could be wasting money.

I carry a smith and wesson rescue knife, it has a window punch and the end of the blade is dulled to keep from cutting a patient when you are cutting the seat belt. It is pretty sweet. It think it runs about $50 from Galls.

I carry a SOG multi tool and also the S&W Rescue Knife. The first day on duty after purchasing the S&W, I used it on the ambulance at an extrication. The department we ran the call with starting trying to cut the door off without removing the glass. It was the perfect moment to use my "NEW" tool and I have used it 5 times since purchasing it. The SOG is awesome and I prefer it over a Gerber or Leatherman. I do have a Marine knife I got while in the military and am contemplating putting it in my bunker gear but it is like 5 1/2- 6 inches. Maybe a little extreme but it might get me out of a bad situation or two.
