Traffic Vest
As you are aware the goverment is making it a law that we must wear a traffic vest when on a highway. This is and has been a part of our sop but it still makes me think. Is it just me or does it not make use more likely to get injured not if but when a car that is on the scene of a mva burst it to flames and we go running up to put the fire out and our little orange vest burst into flames. I have checkeed and hve not found a sourse for one that will with stand the same temp as my turn outs.

Our SOP says we wear them on or along the roadway or in parking lots. We can wear them over our extrication PPE and it's not an issue.
Now this is where I use common sense. If somethings burning, we don't wear them! If we are staging on a possible hostile or violent situation, it ain't happening, (can you say target)! And the Chief concurs.
I am a big fan of using the vest when it's not putting me or my crew in even more more danger. Besides, nowhere in the law does it call for the formation of "The Vest Police"

Turnout gear does not have enough square inches of refelctive material....yet. There is also talk of making gear in brighter colors. For those of you who are bored and want to read the code, http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/, look at chapter 6. Second, if anyone needs vest, shoot me an email and I will work to get you some good ones for a lot less than the Big Guys sell them for. I can get you plain or with words on them. jason@jbrescue.com

I think if the driver of the fire trucks park the apparatus right shouldnt have to worry bout the vest. wouldnt surprise companies start putting them on turnout coats

Ours are Lakeland Industries. 5 point breakaway Class 2, which meet both the 2004 and 2006 specs. They were ordered plain and we had the department initials applied on the back. We've had them about a year and so far they are holding up good. We have a log to show the number of times they have been laundered, (the manufacture recommends no more than 10 washings). I'm not sure what they cost, but knowing my Chief, it wasn't top dollar.

On my dept,,every firefighter is assigned a vest,,and we better have them on when working traffic accidents...as for parking apperatus properly,who knows whats actually proper? i have been at scenes whith full turnout gear, vest , lights flashing and still nearly gotten hit,,,the PUBLIC has to keep their eyes on the road for us to be truely safe out there.

if were in the thick of things -extrication or fighting fire -no vest because of the different hazards. if we are in a support role vest required. in order to be complaint turn out gear has to have more reflective and stay reflective through wear and tear

I have to disagree Will. While it would be great if the public would pay attention when driving and look out for us at roadway incidents, the sad truth is that WE need to keep an eye on the public. Never assume that they see you, and always assume that they will try and hit you! Stay safe Brother!
