Please Buckle up
Another sad day and a grieving family due to lack of seatbelts. This is not the only one since my other blog post regarding seatbelts, but it struck me when reading it... responding to a vehicle fire and leaving behind a young family. Our job is tough, our job is dangerous, our job can be incredibly rewarding. One thing our job should not be is deadly. There are ways to prevent a high percentage of LODD's. Be the solution, buckle up!
NO SEATBELTS IN OHIO APPARATUS CRASH LODD---WIFE AND 3 YOUNG DAUGHTERS LEFT BEHIND....UPDATE:

While responding to the scene, Pitt Township FF Richard L. Kear, 58, Harpster, died in the Line of Duty after being ejected from the fire apparatus that went off the right side of the road. He was part of team responding to a Monday evening vehicle fire call. The engine rolled over into a culvert and hit a utility pole, ejecting FF Kear from the vehicle. Neither firefighter was wearing a seatbelt.
Darrin Rowland, the other Firefighter, crawled out from under the wreckage. FF Kear was flown to Grant Medical Center, Columbus, where he died at about 9:55 p.m. FF Rowland was transported to Wyandot Memorial Hospital where he was treated for injuries and then released. He sustained lacerations to the front and back of his head, abrasions mostly on the right side of his body and bruising on his lower back. FF Kear was a Pitt Township VFF for 16 years. He owned and operated K’s Kwik Mart in Harpster. FF Kear leaves behind his wife and 3 daughters, between the ages of 11 and 17.Take Care-BE CAREFUL-SEAT BELTS: THINK.

See, we don't "have to" buckle up. It's a hard habit to break I think, but slowly things are changing. The new guys that are getting on are starting to get the message and then feel foolish if they wear their belts. I harp on them and give them examples to google if they wish. It's such a pointless waste.
I have it down to a science, gear is on, flashhood and all before I board the rig (takes very little time), as I am getting into my seat, one arm goes into the pack strap, the other as I sit down. seatbelt goes on, then I worry about the waist strap and flashlight. Everything is pre-set, in place, in arms reach, ready to go. It's so simple, and yet, what is it that gets in the way? Pride? Such bullshit. If someone tells you it's foolish to wear a belt or that you don't need to wear it, or you'll be safer without it, they are doing you no favours. Grow a set and buckle up, it's not his/her life, it's yours. Your next goal is to get them to buckle up as well so they do not become a projectile and kill you anyway. Sigh... it's just so simple.

Use the "Rule of six" Goes like this ...place your name at the top of a piece of paper...make two colums of three spaces each...Now write down names in each of the spaces. That way we will all know who you would like for pall bearers at your funeral...Or do what we do.....the rig does NOT pull out of the barn untill EVERYONE is belted...takes a little time but they get the message.....Stay safe all................Paul

It amazes me how we are told that the first thing we are to do is make sure that we are safe and yet we are getting into vehicles (private and professional) and not buckling up. It is unacceptable and when will we learn..
