My F.D. had it's Centennial back in 1997. Since then I've been to several Centennial celebrations for surrounding F.D's. I was surprised to find out that some area F.D's are only 50 years old or so, some are even younger! Just curious how old everyone else's F.D's are. I'm sure there's some Departments on the east coast that are getting close to their Bi-centennial.

My FD was founded in 1981 that makes us 27 years old. We are the youngest FD in the county. Our land area was covered by to depts untill 81. We have one Firemen that has been in the service since the 60s with other Dept. He was one of the founding members and is still active to this day.
Our first fire companies were established in 1849.... The Torrent, the Hydraulicon and the Okamakamessit (the Native American name for the area now known as Marlborough).

In 1855, Reverend Sylvester Bucklin was able to get members of the three companies to set aside their differences and join together as one as the Marlborough Fire Department. The MFD at that time consisted of three hand tubs pumpers, a collection of leather fire buckets and few hundred feet of leather fire hose.

The Town of Marlborough became the City of Marlborough in 1890, additional companies were formed within the department and the first paid firefighters were hired to tend to the horses and the equipment. The volunteers eventually became paid on call firefighters. The city grew the need to hire more firefighters was evident.

The first motorized piece of apparatus was acquired in 1918, by 1921 the Department 's apparatus was fully motorized.

In 1967, the paid professional firefighters of Marlborough sought union representation to improve wages and benefits, working conditions and safety. They approached the International Association of Firefighters in August 1967, a charter was granted to the new local on August 28,1967,and was named Marlborough Firefighters Local 1714 with twenty-four charter members.

Today, with over seventy members of Local 1714, we provide Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials Protection and Fire Prevention/Education to the citizens of Marlborough. This service is provided from three stations with three engine companies, two ladder companies and a rescue company. Members respond to over an average of 5,700 incidents per year.
We were established in 1892, making us 117 years old
My first dept was just under 25yrs, now the dept I'm with was started back in 1876.
Awesome history, thanks Ron!
Our department was in its discussion beginings in 1950 but didn't have a station and its first pumper in the doors until 1951. 59 years.
my FD in NC will be turning 50 in november
Holts Summit Fire Protection District is 21 years old this year.
Last year during one of our big station cleanups, I was lucky enough to find a book with minutes from the first ever FD business meeting going all the way into the 70's. The first business meeting was held on October 12th of 1923. It says in those minutes that the town has purchased a Model-T Fire engine (which we still have), a bil of sale for the T and underneath it states that the group of (6 of the original guys names) shall be known as the Hebron Fire Department.

I thought it was pretty cool to be able to find such an awesome piece of the towns history. The book is now on display in one of our glass cases.
I'll have to be sure and come down there for your Centennial in 2027! Stay safe!
We will be starting our 60th year as an official organzation, informal we have documented roots back to the late 1930's, before that the history is hazy.
Eutaw Fire Dept. was established in the late 1930s our first truck was a 1/2 ton pickup truck that carried the supply hose. The driver would catch the hydrant and you would the fight fire off of the pressure from the hydrant. In 1946 we got our first offical truck, which was a Chevrolet. The newest truck in our fleet is a 2005 Pierce Contender.
I am a third generation firefighter, my dad has 35 years and my late grandfather had 50 plus years.
