I am amazed at the sheer numbers of "new discussions" that are in fact, no more than a little personal sticky note.
"Drinking in the firehouse" can garner 124 replies while a very worthwhile discussion on "Have We Forgotten" can only salvage 14 replies. Why is that? Because one might cause you to have to think a little before you reply? Or perhaps, we are much better at dispensing advice on a personal level but balk at anything pertinent to firefighting?
There has been an effort by some to turn this website into nothing more than a "Dear Abby" offering. How many of you actually go to the news page and come back here to discuss it? And why is the color of a truck so important?
I like fun threads, too. Threads about whackers are always entertaining and I think it is important that, if you have a particularly bad one to come here and talk about it, BUT, if you are going to freak out EVERY time, then you have chosen the wrong field of endeavor. The stark reality of this business called fire/rescue is that there will always be a worse call. If you can't handle that thought, then maybe we should stop posting threads that are no more than trolling for partners and post information here that might actually help you to process the ugly event that you just suffered through.
Simply stated, I joined this website for firefighters and not lonely hearts.
And if that pisses some of you off, sorry. I have to be honest in everything I do and honestly, I think FirefighterNation is missing its targeted demographic. I don't mean to sound pompous, but damn; let's talk about some real friggin' firefighting stuff for once. If you don't like reading or suffer from short attention spans, then maybe we can put it into smaller bursts of info.
But for whatever reason, discussion ain't happening.
Let 'er rip. It won't bother me one bit, if it means getting some actual feedback.

A new Jake and Vinnie will appear in my blogs on Sunday nite.
Check out the new blog I just posted.
Santa Wears An SCBA.
And THEN tell me I'm a cranky old fart.

can't wait for the next Jake and Vinnie installment!!
That's my favorite:

"Hi. I'm new here. I really have no idea what a blog, discussion group or social network are and just to prove that to you, I write in broken English too."

They really need to start by leaving those confessions as a comment on their own profile page.

If someone wants to check them out during their 15 minutes of fame while they're featured as a new user on the home page, they'll go to their profile and read the comment there.

That is... if the viewer looks beyond the user's photo, age and marital status for any real signs of intelligent life.

They have either not figured out, or they are taking full advantage of the first in-first out rule of discussions featured on the home page. Whether they realize it or not, their novice rants push any seemingly real discussions right off the page.
I have to give you that point....and yes a lot of the bullsh_t that gets peddled here gets tiring....But it is rather hard to have a "forum" and limit what people chat about....By the sounds of some of them....I doubt many are above "probie" status....As Chief Bruno wrote in his latest book..."Firefighting reality: Bad beginnings produce bad endings(always try to eliminate bad starts)."....And , yes, our trucks are different...they are yellow....and we are damn pround of them...LOL...our neighbors are always glad to see them roll up on a mutual aid request......and yes they raze the hell out of us at other times about our "school buses"... Have a good day guys....stay safe.....................Paul
You're a cranky old fart, but that has nothing to do with this discussion.
:)
All kidding aside, I give you credit for voicing your opinion, having the cojones to not back down because you got some heat for it, and for validating and legitimizing your viewpoint.
I always read your posts with great interest, and most of the time a smile.
This ain't nothin' compared to what I get if I use the credit card too much.
That is a "discussion" that I absolutely WILL NOT WIN!
But that will be our little secret.
Otherwise, no chinks in my armor.

I laughed out loud on that one.
No need to go there...I had to justify buying paper towels in bulk for 4 years...then I decided a spousalectomy was in order.

LOVE your writing...don't stop.....and I'm jonesing for another Jake and Vinnie episode, so quit replying to me and get busy!!!
Siren,

There's a reason that firefighters have short attention spans. Very few people with long attention spans are attracted to our profession, and a lot of those don't stay very long. It think it's due to the fact that we see so much really bad stuff that if we dwell on it, we'll literally go crazy. Short attention spans are career enhancing and sanity protection for most of....let's go ride bikes.

Yeah; I want to discuss the NIOSH report on Kyle Wilson, but as of yet, there are no replies.
The report is 14 pages long, so it might not fit into everyone's attention span.
But, hey; it's the weekend. Maybe after the weekend, a discussion might break out.
Let's see. I am almost getting goosebumps in anticipation.
TCSS.

As much as I agree with you xchief, I wonder why this dead horse has to be continually beaten. In the months I have been a member here, this same topic has come up many times , albeit with different titles. This tread to me is as frustrating as the love lorn, shell-shocked, etc.

Yes I do like learning, and discussing issues affecting the fire and EMS service. Yes I think there are some threads of wannabes and/or babies, but I also think some on this group have a better than thou attitude and seem to go out of their way to belittle others. But thats the way life is in the real world.

I have lost brothers and sisters not only on my department, but in conflicts from Viet Nam to the present. I think about them often, but I don't have to post a a thread to help me remember them... Because I choose not to. I also choose NOT to read the threads on love, wussing out, and I can't take it. It's my choice.

This country was founded on freedom of choice and expression. This group is a "Social" group which is made up of people I have described above, and the freedom of expression applies to them as well.

I'm off my soap box.
I have to agree.....to a point....I would love to stop by here and see a good "discussion" on the real issues we face on a daily basis....BUT, I also know that can't or won't happen mainly because of some of the "wannabees" here...They know who they are...and after chatting for a bit with them most of us know who they are as well....the closest they have been to a fire scene is maybe a station tour or watching a piece of apparatus going by in a parade. Freedom of speech is a fundamental in our society...but that same freedom pertains to me as well and if I say something that someone doesn't agree with or doesn't like then let me hear your point of view...I am certainly open to discussion...ask some of those that I have had "discussions" with...I may think that they are idiots but I respect them for their views (LOL)....Stay safe and always keep the faith........Paul
Wow.....what is this world coming to....LOL...Stay safe Sister.....Paul
