Anyone here works on a fire dept and goes away to a University or college during school season? I'm on a volunteer dept. but have been wanting to get my Bachelor's but the school is over an hour away, and the way gas prices are I won't be able to go back as much as I'd like. Should I just stick with my Associates in Fire Science and continue training on the Dept. or should I go for my Bachelor's.

I dont personally go away to school (I commute about an hour each way to school and back) but there are plenty of members at my dept that only vollie on breaks because they go to school out of state.

If your ready to go get your bachelors and your financially capable I highly recommend doing so now, theres no reason to not get an education when you can.

Me personally, I am working on a 4yr in admin of justice, 2yr in emergency health services, work fulltime, and volunteer....... so it's still doable to volunteer while going to school, don't let the worry of not getting to volunteer hold you back from an education and taking care of your financial needs. What I do is I volunteer for longer periods of time less frequently when I'm at school (a 24hr shift whenever I can as opposed to a 12hr every week)
If you want your 4yr then go get it. I'm workin on mine also & am not home very often because I have a family too. But i help when i can.
Being an edcucated firefighter will only compliment the arsenol of training a department can give you. Stay in school. The bachelors degree holds more water than local FD training when you cross state lines.
Education is the foundation of training, remember that. :)
My dept says just work the weekends until you can get on a regular shift
I go to school over 4 hours away from home, and I just continue to volunteer when I am home for weekends or breaks. Go on with your bachelors. Most departments will work with you.
I commnte to school but if I were you I wouldn't let your vollunteering get in way of school go to school and make calls when you can. Most departments have a student status where you wont have to worry about it
When volunteering, there is only one way to look at the different calls on your time:
1st - family
2nd - work
3rd - volunteering
In your case, the study takes the place or 'work', because that's where it's taking you, to a career. And a Degree is better than a Diploma (or Bachelor and Associate if you like). Stay with the study and volunteer when you can. We have a University student volunteering with us, he turns out when available which is all that any vol can do really!
