Having found some interest out here for the idea of creating 501c3 corporations for the Volunteer corps, I am seeking input. How many Volunteers out there run with non-profit departments, and exactly how are you structured? Is the District the 501c3, leaving the membership as a club, or is the Department as a whole the 501c3? How does this affect your operations in your governing entity?
Our department is also a not for profit, although I'm told our 501c3 status is unknown. We were, but there may have been a lapse like Ted described. (The president is looking into this, better him than me LOL)
The department is an independent membership organization, not a part of any town or village. We contract with the towns we serve for the majority of our operating funds.
