My uncle worked for Young Fire Equipment in the late 1940s, and for a birthday present one year he gave me a number of fire truck photographs from his collection.

I think these are all 3 stage 500 gpm pumps. Not much by today's standards but back then I'm sure they were red hot items.

Over the years I have given some of the truck pictures away to the departments that had bought them, however I have several left. Last week I finally found the remaining pics and scanned them into electronic format.

I thought I would share them here on FFN, after more than 45 years of keeping them to myself.

I think these photos were taken either just before or the day of delivery.

Some of the pics I had, I gave back to the specific departments. Tonawanda (city), Richmond, Sharon Springs and Old Forge are among those I've distributed. I may go get the Richmond one back just to scan it, since I'm five miles from that fire house.
I know where Ovid is - about 45 minutes east of here!

The Sharon Springs pic I delivered to their fire house. Apparently they were having a fund raiser and the building was wide open, no people or pieces to be found. My daughter and I prowled around until we found what looked like the Chief's desk and left the photo on top.
Joe, those are pretty awesome. I started on a 1947 ALF 700 series that was 28 years "young" during my rookie school year. Those old engines weren't safe or ergonomically correct by today's standards, but they would take a beating and still get the job done.
Dear Joe,

The department that I belong to had a 1969 Ford cab over Young Engine with 1,000 GPM Hale Pump with 1,000 gallons of water. The truck was purchased new and was a demo. The truck was in service from 1969 to 1992 and was the first out piece until 1987 and was placed as second due in our district and was first due on all mutual aid calls. The last we knew that the truck was still in service out in the mid west and that was about 4 years ago and some of the members are thinking about tracking it down and seeing if we can't purchase it back and redo it because that was a very nice piece and if Young was still in business we would have purchased a new one when we replaced it.If I can find a good pic of it in my pics and if I don't I'll see if my dad does because he was in the company when the truck was purchased and if I find a good pic of it I'll get a scanned and I'll send you a copy for your collection if you would like one.

Paul
Young built quite a few rigs for the military as well.
Joe, I belonged to a Fire Department just across the NY PA border on Lake Erie and we had a 1969 ford cab over Snorkel 50' with a Young body on it, Hale 1000 gpm 2 stage pump, 300 galloon tank, it stayed inservice untill 1998 !!! It was a great truck.
Thanks - I saw the heading "1949 Youngs Fire Trucks" and thought "hmmm that sounds familiar." Hey - I started it!

I reposted a blog that highlights a truck from that era, for the newer FFN members.
