Greg,

Check with your departments insurance carrier. They generally have up-to-date training programs and are normally free to their clients.

Hope this helps.

As a general rule most departments I've been with have required EVOC and Pump I as a minimum to begin drivers training. The one training program I helped set up required 10 hours of training per apparatus type. Once you were signed off on the driving portion, you had to go drive with the Chief, and operate the apparatus and all equipment on it with the line officers as a crew. If you passed on all of that then you were cleared to drive that type of apparatus. We used 5 driver trainers and each candidate was required to have time with at least three of them.

Other things that were being implemented as I was leaving were that each driver had to have 5 reviews filled out by a line officer regarding operation of the apparatus through out the year to ensure compliance with policy and laws, development of a CDL style written test with questions on air brakes...etc, and requiring of all members whose duties required them to respond in POV, to take EVOC in their POV.

All driver training paperwork was put in a members file and kept in a seperate filing cabinet for all things vehicle related. If there was ever a question on someone's qualifications or we were required to produce or secure the records they were in just one spot.

The department I was with for most of these had several state level fire instructors on the roster to conduct the EVOC course and all of the drivers trainers had current CDL's and were experienced drivers of commercial vehicles from garbage trucks to over the road truck drivers.

Hope this helps.
