Saw this article on firefighterclosecalls.com Our county is in the process of switching over to digital radios.  Are your departments seeing any of these problems?

It seems we are running into areas that seem to be "dead" spots. No transmissions go out, even when we are in sight of the radios we are calling. Transmissions coming in from areas farther away are loud and clear, but in certain areas, absolutely nothing goes out.
Thanks to those who are submitting data as this will definitely help our area departments deal with issues that will occur during the switch over.

We used to. We had a call once where we had to activate the RIT team because the digital radios wouldn't transmit from inside the structure.

Shortly thereafter we dug our old analog radios out of storage and use them on the fire ground.

Todd, that is what we have had to do.  Our department could not afford to outfit every vollie with a radio, so we were given the old radios and an alpha-numeric beeper and use the old talkaround channel for fireground communications.  So far I am not a fan of the digital system.  Just my $.02

I would stay away from P25 trunked radios, they require a computer for address from your radio and then let you talk.  I don't care what the Fire Dept is doing 100 miles away, and if we need to know Central will let us know.  Give good old analog radios with direct talk any day.

If you need contact with outside world have a com. officer take care of that.

Remember cell phones didn't work during 911 what makes you think P25 well!

Just my thought, please everybody be safe!

Wayne

It appears out system will function off of a series of repeater towers which begs the question what if we lose a tower?  We would then have dead zones.
