ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Students and staff at the University of Michigan are working to prevent cuts at the Ann Arbor Fire Department.

Twelve positions are set to be cut at the department in the next two years.

U of M students and staff members wrote a letter to the university's president and the Board of Regents in response to the cuts.

Part of the letter read:

"It would be unconscionable for the University of Michigan to stand by and allow this trend to continue. We do not want a tragedy to be the trigger for the university taking action while the ongoing safety of U of M students and employees is put at risk."

The Ann Arbor City Council will decide on the cuts Monday.

Just curious if someone can enlighten me on this. In my state, the university educational system is tax exempt, and therefore the town for which has the "university" receives no tax dollars for municipal services to include pubic safety (police and fire) services.

How does this work in Michigan?
This comes from an institution and students that likely pays nothing in property taxes.

If the University of Michagan beleives in fire protection, let them step up and help pay for the fire protection, which I doubt they do now as in most states state property is tax exempt.

This is a subject that chaffs me as I grew up in a city that had a tremendous amount of state property including a state capital building, at least 25 downtown office buildings and a massive state university, and had the nerve to complain about fire department response times even though they were contributing zero to the tax base.
