Need basic RIT, Mayday, Scene Size up, Radio Communications, ICS Power Points, Drills, and or any other training materials for classes!

Howdy Fellow Fire Folks,

 

This is my first post on the FFN (and for that I apologize) but, I am in desperate need of some training materials for the above mentioned topics. These training materials that I am looking for would need to be very basic in nature as these folks are fairly green and so it would be basically an introduction to these topics and of those topics RIT and anything associated with RIT (Mayday, History of RIT, Etc.) and radio communications would be the top priority for me. I have no problem teaching these subjects, but I thought I would ask you guys for a bit of help with some some training materials or where to find them. I have over 800 ppts on various firefighting and TRT topics plus a bunch of videos. If you want them all send me a 16 G flash drive that I can copy them to along with a self addressed stamped envelope ( I don't pay for return postage) to me at Battalion Chief Doug DuBree Rock Island Fire Department 1313 5 Ave Rock Island, IL 61201. As for radio communications, when the FAST/RIT go to work due to a mayday, everyone stay's off the air except Command and the down firefighter. The fast/rit calls when they enter and obtain the location of the down firefighter and then search. All other fire suppression should stop, and the search starts. A Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST), also known as a Rapid Intervention Team/Crew (RIT/RIC), is a team of two or more firefighters dedicated solely to search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. FAST shall have no other operational assignment during an incident. Multiple alarm fires may require multiple FAST/RIC teams.

Through the late 1960s and early 1970s the London Fire Brigade introduced RIT procedures using EATL (Emergency Air Transfer Lines) and EASE (Emergency Air Supply Equipment). This consisted of designated firefighter search and rescue teams (termed "emergency crews") stationed at self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) control entry points, equipped with emergency SCBA specifically designed to be worn by unconscious, injured or trapped firefighters.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have requirements for some type of FAST/RIT at structure fires. These standards require that a minimum of two fire fighters be standing by in full personal protective equipment while other crew members are working in a hazardous atmosphere. The standards are the result of a series of incidents where fire fighters became lost, trapped, or disoriented while fighting a structure fire without a FAST present.

The FAST concept is not universal, with many fire protection agencies training all personnel in rescue duties. Rescue teams are then designated based on apparatus order in the dispatch to a call in which standard operating procedures (SOPs) require that rescue teams be held at entry points. This is the basic concept of the "two-in, two-out" rule.

Note: While all of these versions of the name for a firefighter rescue crew either have been used or continue to be used in several areas, the National Incident Management System (NIMS) has determined that Rapid Intervention Crew, "RIC" will be the standard term. Currently, U.S. federally required training programs, from DHS and FEMA, are in the process of standardizing many terms and procedures under NIMS.

FAST members are normally equipped with some or all of the following:

* Full turnout gear
* Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
* Personal alert safety system (PASS device)
* Portable radio that uses the fireground frequency and is available to the incident commander
* Hand tools
* Hand light
* Search rope or webbing
* Rapid air transport (RAT) bag which slips over an SCBA bottle and holds an extra mask to tap into the bottle to provide a downed firefighter with air. This so-called RIT Bag was invented by Darrin Shaw, a firefighter with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue. The term 'RIT Bag' is now widely used, but the trademark stays with RIT BAG[1] from Puyallup, WA.

I have to admit when I first listened to that, I started to have anxiety. And to find away to get their and help the brother out. Glad this one had a happy ending! I hate the side lines. Put me in the game!

I can appreciate your concerns and understand your assessment, but this situation is a bit different in that I was asked to teach these classes at the last moment and was wanting some help with materials to teach the class with and rather than re-inventing the wheel I just figured I would ask brothers for any training materials that they may already have developed or know where to look for some good reference materials and would use those as adjuncts to my other training materials and although I feel very confident in my teaching of the materials and abilities this would not be and is not a technical class for RIT as much as it is about why RIT, RIC, or FAST teams exist, History of, where their staged, who activates them, tools they carry, roles on the fireground, positions and roles of those, etc. and as you can see that’s why I said very basic materials.

On the other hand, I can also understand that you may feel like I and others like me are stepping on your toes and or possibly pulling income away from you or others like you that are in the business of selling/promoting your teaching/instructing business's anytime we ask for training materials or advice on such. That was or is not the intention of this thread nor should the training section of FFN be your platform for pushing your business to further your income at the expense of others or making others that are asking for a bit of help with training materials look as if they are incompetent in training whatever and that you and others like you are our only saving grace for training. Brother, this is neither a union meeting nor a collective bargaining discussion and although I'm a faithful union brother, this is not the bargaining table to bargain for pay raises or whatever, nor is it the place to file a grievance because you have been wronged in some way.

It appears that you have assumed that by my asking for assistance in this thread that I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing and or teaching. Sir, you have no clue as to my back-ground, education, experience, training, certifications, or years of service. I guess I could assume that you are trying to intimidate me or others like myself into using your services! The days of intimidating folks into doing something like the mafia or unions use to do are long gone at least they are here in Texas, we don't scare easy. I also might assume that you may have created a website and business with the hopes of drawing business and baffling someone with bullcrap and that you don't have a clue about the subjects that you’re instructing on. These are all assumptions on my part and none are based on actual facts. Just like on the fireground, Don't assume anything!

Here's a word of advice, you probably should think twice in the future about biting the hands that possibly might one day feed you and although I had actually looked at your web-site prior to posting this thread and had actually thought of inquiring about what you or others like you offer, I think I'll reconsider! Bill, let me give you a bit of food for thought in the future, if you want to grow your business and be fruitful then maybe you should reconsider your approach at gaining new customers. What's that old saying? Ohhh, Yeah, you will catch more fly's with honey than you do with vinegar and the company I work for has deep, deep, pots of honey and so you may have adviced your way right out of a very fruitful venture! Maybe, your first post on this thread should have been an offer to help in the form of advice, training materials, and or reference materials rather than offering your training services and criticizing someone you don't know or assuming they are doing more harm than good right off the bat without knowing the background of what’s going on!

I didn't start this thread or join this community with the intention of looking for a fight, but I'm more than willing to accommodate those that try to make someone look incompetent for asking a simple question or looking for a bit of help or advice.

Training our firefighters should not be about the bottom dollar or our egos, it should be about what’s best for them, their survival, their long term health and ultimately about them coming home to their loved ones at the end of their shift or call outs!

As a training officer I don't care for re-inventing the wheel, either. I gather material from any source I can find, then adapt it to suit our needs. Chief DuBree has been one of my most helpful sources. I thank him again for all he's done.
When a Mayday is called. Fire suppression operations must continue.
Hey Chief, I am also in need of these types of training materials. I am an Ops AC for a small Federal Fire Department and we have a VERY limited training budget so anything I can find helps us out tremendously. Thanks
