First Responders
Just wanted everyones opinion out there of a debate that has come up at our last Operations meeting. My volunteer dept has a small issue right now of firefighters that will not get there first responder license because they dont want anything to do with medical calls, the only thing that they want to deal with is the fire side of it, as we all know those dont happen every day as to where the medical calls do. My county dept. runs about 1700 calls a year and about 1% of those are going to be something fire related, I just wanted some ideas for those that get the license and dont want to run the medical and also those that refuse to get the license how to deal with them. There has been talks of making a certain call percentage that you have to make and if any of you alls depts. do that let me know what percentage you use

Our firefighters are required to have a least a MFR license.

Thanks guys we are implementing that everyone that gets voted on from this point forward must get a maintain atleast a First Responder certification but the problem still comes into play is they can get it but if they dont want to run any medical calls they dont have to unless we put in our bylaws that you have to run atleast a certain percentage of the calls where it kind of forces them to have to run medical so they can meet there certain percentage. Anyone have a suggestion of a certain percentage since it is a volunteer dept. and we do run about 1800 calls a year. I also have to take in consideration that most people that dont have a paid fire dept. job usually work 8 to 5 Monday through Friday as well.

My opinion is, if they're not willing to go to medicals (a majority of the calls you get) then there is the door, and get out of my department.

Our State requires first responder status for all fire and police so they all know before getting on that this is just part of the job. We dont require running medical calls, unless EMS calls for assistance or its MVA. BUT, we do require them to attend certain medical based classes during the year that we have in our department. Examples are C-spne immob. , Cardiac and Breathing emergencies, and of course defib and CPR refeshers. Soon, at least in Mass, most departments will require all future fighters to obtain EMT cert. as part of the job.
