DO YOU THANK IT SHOULD BE MANDITORY FOR ALL VOL TO DO SOME AMOUNT OF TRAINING EVERY YEAR., AND FOR VOL. TO BE CRET. TO BE AN OFFICER.? MY ANSWEAR IS YES AND I AM A VOL. JUST SAYING...
Well I found out somethings. Here in Indiana you don't have to be certified by the state. OHSA says you must be trained in firefighting and if your chief thinks you are trained enough then thats good enough. OSHA also states interior firefighters must have a minimum of training once every three months. All others at least once yearly.
I must point out in Indiana AHJ is OSHA and NFPA is used as a guide. When I found this out all I could say is WOW. Kinda scary
There seems to be quite a few places that only require the chief's "ok" as certification. One of the questions I ask is, what training does the chief have, and is it current.
Many firefighters with more than a few years in the service will say they are certified in this or that, but again, you have to ask when was the last time they were updated. Getting certs is one thing, but keeping up your cert is another that seems to slip by some people. Sure, the basics might be the same, but the advancements or alterations might get missed. Then confusion sets in when working with someone who became recertified.
So, I guess what I am saying is, yes to training, then train again.
Derek, I agree I know to keep my state cert for instructor I must turn in inservice hours every three years. My dept requires state certification to go on runs.
If I were chief I would not like having my neck in that noose by saying there trained good enough without the states backing. Train and train then make very detailed records. If not for firefighter safety (#1 reason in my book) Then at least if you an officer, chief, Training officer to cover your own butt. If your not training a whole lot of hell can be rained down on you and your department if someone gets hurt.
As a newer guy I feel weird as an instructor about going over simple little things with guys that have been doing those things for years. But they must forget things the same way I do so lets do it again. I think of it as sharping a blade.
Exactly right. With any skill you must repeat the lessons to keep the edge sharp, like you said. I get the same feeling. The "old guys" roll their eyes when I cover the basics over and over, but the guys who understand why we do it pay attention and participate. Can't be weekend warrior. Train like you fight. Stay safe.
