Ever since the September 11th attacks firefighters and departments across the country have been memorializing the fallen through various activities. Among these memorials is an event benefiting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation that has grown since its inception five years ago in Colorado.

The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs was first started on September 11, 2005 when five members from the Denver and Castle Rock fire departments gathered together to climb 110 flights of stairs at 1999 Broadway in Denver.
In 2006 the tiny memorial grew to include seven more participants, two more departments and was held at a new location. The 54-story Quest Building is Denver's second tallest building.
Participants started in the basement and climbed the stairs twice to get the full 110-flight experience. Tenants joined in the memorial experience by cheering on the climbers and posting signs of support and encouragement.
On the heels of such support and enthusiasm, the 2007 stair climb attracted several hundred participants from all over Colorado. In 2008, organizers limited the number of participants to 343, in honor of the fallen FDNY firefighters.
Additionally, each participant was "assigned" someone to climb for. A badge with a photo and name of each FDNY firefighter killed was worn by the climbers.
2010 brought a partnership between the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb organizers and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Efforts to support the families of the 9-11 firefighters are tied in to each event and include following the lingering health effects suffered by survivors since the attacks.
Organizers quickly remind interested individuals that the event is not a race, but a active memorial to each of the 343 firefighters as well as a demonstration of the commitment to physical fitness.
Since its beginnings, the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb has expanded from being held in Colorado to also be held in Florida, Maryland and Tennessee. The partnership has allowed organizers to help you organize a memorial stair climb in your own state or find one close to you.
The process to host a stair climb is detailed, however the NFFF and 9-11 Memorial Star Climb organizers have created an action plan to assist your department or organizers.
Super great event! I participated in the climb in Nashville, it was great getting to meet so many people from departments allover the southeast. Definately going to climb for the same fallen firefighter this year.
The City of Austin, TX, has been doing a 9-11 memorial stair climb since 2002. Even though we do not know a lot of FDNY FF´s, we really feel proud of what they did that tragic day. It is a way to show our respect to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
