I was wondering if anyone has or has seen someone with the vine pattern on their leather painted. Is there any tradition behind it or is it just to look good? I was also wondering the best way to go about doing this. Any help is appreciated.

Never saw a vine patteren on a helmet before. But I do know that there are some companies that paint designs on helmets for firefighters, or if you know a really good artist you can have them do it.
Sorry i shouldve specified, the vine pattern is mainly on cairns i believe(on the brim of the helmet). I have a yellow Sam Houston and thought painting the vines black to go with the black tets would look good and kinda different. Thank you for the input though.
Oh ok I see what your talking about now. I thought you wanted to paint an actual vine on your helmet. Best way if you dont want to send it out to have it painted would be to do it yourself. My brother and I do alot of helmet restoration for friends and I do most of the sanding but when my brother paints them I know he uses a high heat paint, I believe for grills and such. Also tape the area off and spray just the vine if you are going to do it. We have found using a brush can sometimes be more difficult than just taping and painting.
Ha yea shouldve been a little more descriptive. Thank you though for the advice.
Mine is painted. It is white, the same as the rest of the helmet.

Were you maybe referring to a contrasting paint color for the vine pattern?
Only way I have seen it done is to use a hard rubber print roller. Apply thin layer of paint to it and roll on the raised carving. The hard rubber will only hit the high spots of the vine design. It takes lots of thin coats to do it this way. Probably faster to just do it with a very high quality brush and a steady hand.
