Hey Y'all
Should all FD have the same color turnouts? If so, what color?
Also, what color turnouts do you prefer?
What do you think works better; black, yellow, silver, orange...ect?
no its up to the dept. but i do think all dept should have the name of the fire dept ur on and at lease ur last name and first name on it for id purpose. I like the tan turn outs the best
We just finished buying all new gear for all of our guys. Tan. the only one who wears a different color is the chief. even our assistant chiefs are wearing tan. Helmet color is the only thing different.
I think black's too warm for Florida (though it looks good). Our Dept. tries to keep it uniform but we always seem to have the occasional oddball set laying around.
I think it would be smart say for a county to all get togeather an buy from one vender. I think you should get a better price on 75 or 100 sets of turnouts over say 10 or 15.
no names, do you want the media showing up at your house before your chief if something goes wrong? we have id numbers for accountability. only the dept. name should be on your gear.

What the heck is that supposed to mean? First of all, there are many depts that have the FF's name on their turnouts, including FDNY, Chicago, etc. As far as the media, how the heck is the media going to show up at your house before the chief if something goes wrong? The media isn't going to know who was involved until afterwards anyway. Pretty weak argument for not wanting names on turnouts.
how do you know that they wont know? suppose that you were working a mva and were struck by a car. news crew happened to be on scene. next thing you know they are at your house asking your family about their opinion before they even know what happened, all because they saw your name. i am well aware that many depts. have names on their turnouts, and i am firmly against this practice, for just the reason listed above. while a large metropolitan dept. may not have trouble with notifying a family promply, a smaller volunteer dept way not be able to spare someone until after the incident. this allows plenty of time for a family to find out about it and not know the details.
We go Red for interior, Black for general and Safety Yellow for Safety and the Blue for EMS - The leather fronts Are in White and Black.
As far as gear We went from Black to tan due to the heat issues and the black absorbing the heat and the tan has been found to be cooler. Just our opinion.
I don't think we should all wear the same colour.
One simple reason. To fuel discussions like this by people wondering if the "grass is greener" elsewhere where the other guys have the "cool" bunker gear. lol
I like the look of black... but how do you know you have all the soot (fuel) cleaned off after so you don't ignite next time you are in a fire?
We have yellow/goldenrod bunker gear and colour coded helmets for rank structure.
(Yellow=FF, Red=Capt, White=Chief or Deputy Chiefs)
I like the yellow because it tells you if you got it clean or not (health and safety issue); it is more visible in all weather conditions, especially at MVC scenes, it is SLIGHTLY cooler than black in the summer.
That said, I would prefer the light brown/tan bunker gear.
I think the tan jackets with the black pants is a great look... but does not satisfy my obsession with safety.
