Ice Rescue tools and techniques
Just curious as to what everybody else is using for ice rescue gear to remove the victim from the water. I have seen short boards with buoys attached for flotation. Just curious if anyone uses anything like that, or has any other ideas?

We use Cold Water Rescue Slings and Ice Rescue Shuttles from Marsars. We have been using them for about12 years and have had great success with them. We usually have a large number(avg 15) of rescues a year and we are still using our original gear.

We have 7 lakes in our jurisdiction, with lots of ice fisherman present… We have slings, and short boards, we use “gumby” suits along with mustang ice suits, along with our Zodiac boat (our neighboring town also has a hovercraft at our disposal . We use several different techniques depending on the type of response/dispatch info.
On our ice responses, a responder goes on the ice with ice awls (2 Phillip head screwdrivers tied together to pull responder along). The responder has a rope tethered to him/her, with an extra carabineer/rope that wraps around the victim and they are both then pulled to shore,this is if the victim is somewhat near the shore,(This technique can be challenging, but with training it works very well), otherwise the boat and/or hovercraft (auto aid) are deployed with responders and rescue slings aboard.
There is a nice tool out there called a Rescue Alive sled….it is a little cumbersome but sure works nice. I have budgeted for one.
