Onboard Driver Safety Systems
Hi all, I'm just curious if any of you out there have these systems on your Ambulances as well? (The systems that monitor your speed, hard turns, hard braking, seat belt violations etc.. at all times)
What are your thoughts on them? Do you think every Ambulance service should get these put on their rigs? Do you have any issues with them?

As far as I'm aware, our vehicles just have the "black box" that they can examine after the fact to find out what was happening prior to/during a crash.

Not a bad idea either, I think all Emergency vehicles should have something similar. Ours monitor EVERYTHING in real time, and it "tones" you every time you do something wrong, it takes points off of your evaluation immediately whether you deserved it or not (the only drawback I've found)

Big brother is alive and well...
The "black box" does not see what the driver sees. Until the black box can figure out that some idiot driving and texting with a cell phone cuts in front of you, drifts into your lane, or some other moron runs a stop sign or red light and you have to take evasive action to protect your patient and your personnel... they should not take points of anyone's "evaluation".

We have the same system and I think that they a good thing as it helps to "regulate" those that seem to get that adrenalin high and overlook safety. Now, there are also times when you get dinged because of an external factor that is beyond your control but stuff like that should be evident in the historical trending.
Most of our dings seem to be when we have a firefighter driver that doesn't know about it and just punches it to the floor. We get to the hospital and then they inform us that there was this buzzing sound that rang all the way here.

We only have the drive cam in our trucks. It would be better if we had them combined with an all safe system. Drive cam just works if you have a sudden jolt, like a pothole. I have worked in systems that used all safe and you can tell the difference in the ride. The clowns that think every trip to the hospital should be wide open can't drive like that. Brakes last longer and there is less wear on the drive train because you have to slow down sooner and brake smoother.

That's exactly what we have, they are great. They've cut down alot on accidents, and complaints about emergency personnel driving too fast, and even maintenance costs. I would recommend this to any ambulance service. Like I said the only drawback i've seen is getting toned for some outside factor out of your control and it being used against you, but they do come off your record after so many miles so it's not too bad
