An off-duty Riverside firefighter was ambushed and killed in a murder-suicide early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Nick Barrios, 41, a 12-year veteran of the department, was found wounded in front of a home in the 5900 block of Windemere Way near Chicago Avenue and Alessandro Boulevard, police said.

He died from his injuries after being taken to a local hospital.

Police said that a Moreno Valley man, Rene Trejo, 36, ambushed Barrios in the street in front of the home about 3:30 a.m. and shot him multiple times.

Police said Trejo then went inside the house and shot himself.

Police did not say what provoked the shooting.

Police said they are not looking for additional suspects.

They are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Rick Wheeler at 951-353-7134.

Are the shooter and the victim connected in some way, or was this a "wrong place wrong time" thing?
