I know this is a topic that should be very important to all firefighters, but everyday I read about LODD from health issues (heart attacks mostly). These are deaths that for the most part can be prevented. Exercise should be a mandatory part of your life. Good cardio and weight training programs and a good diet prolong your life and make you better at your job and that's better for the community you serve. This line of work is very physical demanding and I know that when I go into a fire I don't want to have to worry about a crew member dropping dead because he couldn't stop sucking down the sodas and big macs. I know I'm ranting a bit it is just very upsetting to have to read about this crap almost everyday. I seem to see more of it on the EMS side. I always hear the response " I'm on an ambulance all day and don't have time to eat right, I have to grap something quick and go." I worked on an ambulance on 16 hour shifts before I went to the fire side and didn't have that problem. It's called pack a lunch.

I AM A STRONG BELIEVER IN BEING FIT AND STAYING HEALTHY. I DONT THINK IT MATTERS VOLUNTEER OR CAREER THERE'S IS NO EXCUSE FOR BEING OUT OF SHAPE. LIKE YOU SAID "PACK A LUNCH". I THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE A PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST EVERY FEW YEARS FOR ALL FIREFIGHTERS, PASS OR YOUR DONE TILL YOU CAN PASS IT. IT'S NOT ONLY FOR YOU BUT THE OTHERS ON SCENE. WE NEED TO TRUST THAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, ARE BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE CAPABLE OF PERFORMING THERE DUTIES. I KNOW IT CAN BE HARD TO FIND TIME TO WORK OUT BUT 20 MINUTES A DAY CAN MAKE A DIFFRENCE. BE SAFE
It is hard to develop a workout routine between the Fire Department and my other job. I have one but it's hard to stick with it sometimes.

But hey don't we all get enough exercise from: dodging responsibility, jumping to conclusions and stabbing others in the back? hahaha
Kevin, I could not agree more. My "problem" was that I allowed my schedule to dictate my habits. I finally realized that my "problem" was me masking my hypocracy. I would preach good habits and then go back and crash on the couch. At my station we decided to make a group effort to change. We are doing group workouts at least three nights a week at the station. We are spending more time pushing each other to improve, and it has also become a forum to work out any friction that arrises in the house. Brothers and sisters, I'm telling you it is a formula for personal and professional success to take care of your self.
Couldnt agree more!
Karsten I am with you its tough with a rough schedule. I work 3, 12 hr overnights in a row and it just kills my drive to do anything. But like you said we have to realize its our own problem and not let the rest of our lifes dictatet our habbits and our health.
Like I had posted I worked 3 16 hour shifts a week plus special events. If I could find a way to work out, eat right, and take care of my family anybody can do it. You just have to have the determination to do it. The end results will be that you are more well rested, energetic, and less prone to being sick or injured. I think those are pretty good byproducts of a healthy lifestyle.
