Age and The Ability to Perform
Should a persons age be a facture in determining if they can or cannot perform certain tasks for the fire department? What about a persons weight? Or should it be if you can perform your task performances in the allotted time no matter how old you are or how much you weigh? I have been reading a discussion (and participating in it) where if you are older you are more stubborn, and over confident in your abilities. What about those who are younger fresh out of school and academy should that same comment apply to them?

I was amazed at what I saw during academy practicals. One fire chief showed up to a vehicular burn to learn with flip flops and shorts and showing us recruits what to do and where to go while the car was on fire. There are numerous times when I have gone on calls, the guys would be in the smoke breathing that stuff without the SCBA's. I told one of the guys from my station that next time I had better see him with his mask on or hell hath no fury like me. (I told this to him on sidebar, would never say something like this to him with others around).

How can you expect change when the trainers are telling recruits one thing and in the next breath doing the exact opposite?

Just before I joined the fire department one of our fire fighters was killed on the way back from drill. I don't know what lead up to it, but some how the h&w that he was in rolled and he was DOA.

Everytime I go on a call I am scared as hell that I am going to do something wrong. I don't think I have great confidence, but what helps for me is on the way to a call my partner and I will discuss the various possibilites and what needs to be done and one the way home from a call we will discuss what we could have done differently.
