What was the "Fluffiest" piece of equipment your department ever purchased?
A department where I worked bought a Golf Cart, and outfitted it with Rapid Response Gear in order to provide EMS service to down-town residents during Friday Night Markets. We had a full complement of ALS gear, and some basic suppression gear. We also ran a bike program to support it's operation. (Sorry...I can't find any pictures at the moment)
The cart had fancy lettering, radios, lights and siren!

Really, Dude? They are trucks, they do forcible entry, recon, search, rescue, ventilation, salvage, ladders and overhaul, where does the water and pump come into that? Every fire gets a ladder and four engines, there is always an engine sitting around not being used. That is fluff money spent by a chief that does not get it. Our trucks may use their pump once every two years, and even then there is an engine parked nearby not being used. Pumps on ladder trucks, redicules! I would submit that you look at cities that fight a lot of fire, do they have pumps on their trucks? Detroit, FDNY, LA, Chicago, Camden, Portland, Seattle, DC, I don't think so. Fluff money to sooth a chiefs ego.

One of the State prisons that is close to us made us the cages for individuals gear.....saved us a ton of ca$h......

I wish I had pictures of a golf cart ambo. We use it for the 4th of July event and any big events that a regular ambo. can't go. It has an extended back on it to hole a gurney an a medic. so they can get to the regular ambulance.. The medics are also on bikes that hold minimal ALS including ECG.

Actually... we have a golf cart outfitted for ems and very basic fire... and we have a "roach coach"... both donated (we built the "mobile cook shack")... we use both at events in town such as the motor speedway and concerts, both are also available during extended operations (ie: warehouse fire that took days). both have actually turned out to be quite practical.

i dunno how "fluffy" you want to call this, but it's an old school bus we've converted to our EMO (emergency management organization) command post, as you will see in the very back of the bus is a bit of a rehab area, couch, coffee pot, and cooler full of water. also in the front of the bus is areas for ems, police, fire, and city works so they have a centeral hub in case of any big disaster in the city

i should also add all the work done to this unit, body work, sanding it down so it could get painted all the interior work was done by the members of our department, we had to get a local body shop to paint this beast for us.

I agree with John that Quints could be of use to the smaller departments.. There were times I wish we had a quint on our small dept. We had 2 engins, 2 tankers, utility, and a van no ladders.. A ladder would have helped with some pol fire we had. so instead of responding3 trucks we would only need one, but at that time there were no quits.

In "no ladders" I assume you mean no ladder or aerial devices....you do still carry ladders on your engines don't you...? LOL We can't justify the costs associated with an aerial in our Department....a neighboring Department has a 100 footer if we have the need.....and yes we have called then a time or two...that's what mutual aid is all about....
