ABC Television's "Jimmy Kimmel Show" and their 09-14-10 video asking the public to kick a "Hero" in the nuts... Really?

If any of you are wondering whether your jobs are safe, please note how the media depicts you, and for those who think Rescue Me is an acceptable show, please consider what is really lost when you allow someone to loose respect for you. This video clearly shows that to be true. What a sad day for emergency services, and just days after the 9-11 anniversary. Looks like some people did forget...

I don't know how other feel, but for me personally, I am outraged and deeply offended.

09-17-2010 Update: The following email was sent directly to the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

What were you thinking?

On the 09-14-2010 Jimmy Kimmel show, a skit entitled, "Kick a Hero In the Nuts" was shown. I am enraged that this type of satire would be allowed, especially considering it was only three days after
the 9-11 anniversary. The additional use of military people and the direction
to "kick hero's in the nuts" was incredibly insensitive toward
families and coworkers who have lost someone special in their lives. If your
goal was to denigrate law enforcement, firefighters and military personnel,
then you were successful. My only question is why? I find it hard to believe
that no one in the production company stepped up. I understand that it is a
late night talk show but handling oneself with dignity and honor and respecting
those folks out there that risk their lives needs to be remembered. I am sure
you have seen, heard or read the phrase, "We Shall Not Forget". I
can't forget and am amazed that you managed to not only forget and denigrate in
the process the memories of all the HERO's that sacrificed their lives for
people they never even knew.

i think it was totally wrong for jimmy kimmel to show that video. He shouldn't be making a statement like that about the heros of 9/11.He obviously doesn't know the meaning of "HERO".
Living in Canada makes no difference what so ever, I live in Canada and we are all brothers. I take great offense from this and don't care for this kind of disrepectful behaviour.
Could it have been irony? Because after all, that's pretty much what's happening around the nation right now.
I've used the video you posted many times in training to show the importance of why we need to wear our SCBAs. (It cracks up the class and then allows me to get serious with the real bad stuff in smoke.)

Yes it shows an actor portraying a firefighter in a negative light but then again, not many cop or medical shows have actors that play them nicely either. We should be secure in our profession but when we have FFs driving drunk, soliciting prostitutes, stealing narcs from the kits, or arranging to meet underage girls on the Internet... all stuff that continually makes the news... I'll take the above video because it's humor.
I find it very disgusting that he can say something like that. But, this what the "hollywood types" are like. It is all to do with ratings and getting his name out there. I resfuse to watch anything on ABC, for numerous reasons and one of them is having people like that on the air.
• understand that not just firefighters were depicted... we are the ones that got kicked in the nuts though, in front of a fire engine

And out of the other "heros" depicted, which group doesn't carry guns?? I would pick the fire service too, less chance of getting shot.

• the comparison using the Navy does not fit here because who cares about the Navy... our taxes do not go up or down as a direct result compared to local voters making a decision that could affect staffing levels, station closures, payroll or benefits

Point was that jokes are made all the time, but it doesn't change the professionalism, nor the dedication of members doing the job. It is about a different perspective, and also why wouldn't it fit? The Navy/military is also depicted in the skit. Again it is doubtful a late night show is going to have such pull on local tax dollar control.

• this is a perspective thing and they all add up to where eventually, the respect that we as a profession once enjoyed could be put at risk as a result of someone using our profession to get a laugh, again at our expense.

I do not see a comedy late night show truly risking the respect we do enjoy. In the fire service we sometimes are our own worst enemy.....I do not see this sketch being as much of a respect deterrant than say that of FF's committing arson, or a double LODD because some FF's were racing cars after training, etc.

• firefighters and fire department funding can be affected many ways, and using the media as a tool to degrade and minimize the publics perception is a hidden agenda by some... we all have agenda's right?

Depends upon the spin one makes. I agree with Ralph and one can say the budget, staffing issues being played by politicians is like a "kick in the nuts". However, why does there have to be an agenda? It is a joke, meant to be funny, bad taste perhaps, bad timing, sure, but I'm not taking offense and getting up in arms about it.
Maybe, just maybe Jimmy was trying to prove a point about the budget issues and closing/laying off FF`s? Kick them while they are down? Just a thought.

And if that wasn't the point, that would be spin I, as a FF, would put on the clip.
Before I just didn't like Jimmy Kimmel, but now I want to stab him in the eye with a meat thermometer....thanks!
I have seen and been treated worse on calls. I see firefighters do this to each other on here everyday.

Had some jackasses just a week ago startle a homeless man as I walk up to do a welfare check, Because they wanted to see a firefighter and a homeless man fight. It didnt happen to there disappointment. To top it off we had just went to one of the mens mothers house two days before for a EMS run. Really thankful for us helping his mother huh? But thats why I do it for the glory and the money I make as a volunteer.
Jimmy Kimmel is not funny in the least in my opinion. Never has been, never will be. With any luck he will be a has been sooner rather than later. Ignore him.
I second the motion
Great so now we can be sued or kicked in the nuts for trying to help someone
