Weirdest Thing Found At A Fire
Well the weirdest thing ive ever found was at a structure fire in a vacant house it had been vacant for about 10 years and i found a really old prosthetic leg and i still have it sitting in the firehouse lol

My first Captain was the greatest guy and I owe a tremendous amount to him but rest his soul her was always cracking us all up! He got cancer and still worked a long time taking treatments. He had to go crap a lot during those times and had to go right then! One of our old three story bed and breakfast historic structures got hit by lightning one day and was on fire in the attick and upper floor. Captain Robert and I was first in with a line up the long stairs when rescue suited up to do search and rescue Captain had to take a crap when we got to the second floor so he went to the bathroom and shut door and opened that window. The structure had ventilated it self so seearch and rescue was making quick progress while I manned the knozzle on the third floor. They got to the locked bathroom and kicked it in to find Captain taking a dump! What a surprise for them!

One more about Captain Robert on shift one night we got a call a car went off into a drainage ditch and a woman was trapped inside! Upon arrival she was in the car up to the roof with about six inches of air left, Captain jumps in breaks window and pulls her out. As they were swimming back they both started screaming and hollering and Captain said to pull the booster line quick so I got it ready and as soon as they both got to land they started stripping and telling me to hit them with the hose! They both were covered in fire ants!

We live in Southern Plantation country and Captain Robert and I got a call one shift from the Ga. State Fire Marshall to meet him quietly on one of our most popular plantation mansions. We were directed to not use radio communication so we didn't know what to expect! Arrived on scene and was escorted to a secret room behind a moving bookshelf! Cases of dynomite that had not been turned in years and were wet with nitroglycerin on the bottom! We had to tote it out set it on the back of a pickup and move it out to a nearby burn pile where we set it on fire and burned it up! No bomb scwads back in the seventies in south Georgia!

... fire ants are nasty - Capt. Robert was lucky to have you has his wingman that day... and it sounds like many other days too. RIP

He pooped his pants hanging the flag one morning pulling the rope! Ha ha he was a great guy I was lucky to train under him! I rejoined after walking away from all this after I lost my best friend his wife two kids and niece in a car vs truck wreck. Life Flight crashed right when I was about to go to work on it and I just walked away! Twenty years later here I am a lot has changed. Old school stuff doesn't apply but the fire/med service still allows you to make a difference in someones life even your co-workers! Capstain Robert was that kind of guy!

LOL - that must have been very funny. I love a good pooping story... and a man with a good sense of humor who is not afraid to laugh at himself and the little funny things that happen through life's journey.

And the new young ones might have book knowledge and the new procedures under their belt... but that is nothing compared to good ol' fashion real-life experience... The rest you can quickly catch up on... Good Luck !

Three years on FF I'm still taking EMS at a distance! Got up the nerve to do First Resonder again but my work schedule hasn't allowed me time yet. I came up on a wreck that I posted about in my profile that helped me a lot! We didn't have rehab back in the old days most just burned out and left for good. I highly encourage everyone to do rehab when needed and take advantage of what HR. Has to offer nowdays! Sometimes the things start piling up on you in life. It is different being in a role of mentor than actually doing the work but the young ones are eager to learn and us old school guys need to step up and teach the right way so they can grow in the fire service. Its been great so far just knowing I still got it at old age but watching the enthusiasm these younger ones have us fun too!

Yea, I know what you mean - they don't really teach firefighters/EMS to ask for help and receive it - in real-life practice - instead they just teach push on & push on and suck it up. But sometimes you have to find a way to release some pressure and process all the crazy stuff we have to experience.
And I know nothing helps more than a seasoned guy saying, "I know this is difficult, if you need to talk about it, I am here anytime... and here is my personal number if you want to talk away from the station... and you can come by my house anytime, we can talk." I know several guys on my department established themselves as life-savers in this way - day or night, they never turned me away from their doorstep.
There are some good guys on here - hope you are making some friends.
Some of the cranky old guys on this site want to wring the necks of the young ones - you should make friends with them and help build their mentoring attitude ;-)

I got to tell this one! On a paramedic call one day we have migrant workers here in springtime to work on farms and plantations! Woman complaining of stomach pain! Well we assessed the patient and loaded her for transport with what we thought possible female problems or bladder infection! Got to ER had this foreign Dr that could speak with her so my partner and I was doing paperwork at the Nurses station when all of a sudden the Dr comes running out of the room screaming with the nurse right behind! After they calmed down they said to schedule emergency surgery! She had put a potato up vagina and a vine was growing out with leaves on it! In her country of hati they do that to cure yeast infections! She said she forgot she put it up there months ago!

must be she was comfortable putting vegetables in her - cause as I girl I can't say that would be my first approach to an infection

They removed a potato big as a football! It was no wonder she was having pains in her abdomen!
