Hey Guys im starting to get into ems been a FF for two years going to do a ride along with Rescue Squad monday just wondering is it okay to wear shorts with high tactical boots or is that just weird or looks ridiculous thanks.
I only know of ONE EMS service in my area that allows their medics to wear shorts on regular duty.
(others that have "bicycle units" for special events allow shorts for them, but that's it).
Only a handful of them actually do. Our EMS don't usually have bunker gear of any sort so the uniform pants are your only protection from broken glass, metal, etc (however weak the level of protection). Many don't bother wearing the shorts so they lessen the risk of getting cut.
The other issue is trying to find a look that is still professional. Sorry, but the 8" high tactical duty boot looks weird with shorts.
If your department will let you get away with it, I used to wear an all black "pleather" basketball shoe that was a steel-toe "green patch" safety shoe. Looked professional with meeting regulation safety requirements but had the added advantage of being lighter, more comfortable and still providing ankle coverage and support. I always thought that wouldn't look AS bad with shorts on...
On days when I used to get 100 degree days (PLUS humidity) I would keep an extra set of uniform pants (and shirts) to change into mid shift if I got too soaked with sweat. Then run a mini load of laundry back at the station between calls.
Our dress code did not allow for shorts or t-shirts. We were lucky they made ties optional in the summer!

I won't be wearing shorts...Remember, there was a 2009 U.S. Line Of Duty Death due to a bloodborne pathogens exposure years earlier where a ff was on a medical call and had an open cut on his knee that he was unaware of....
