I don't beleive shorts have any place in any uniform policy for operational members, except back at the station.

Out in the field? No way!
Damn Lutan....there you go again......I have to agree with you again....when will this madness stop...? LOL....Wear your big-boy pants, collared shirt..preferably clean ones....and like the Fire service remember the 3-up rule.....Show up......Keep up....and last but far from least shut up.....save your questions until after the call........
Shorts always for me Luke, all year 'round. By far the most comfortable for wearing under PPC... And that is the key - under PPC. Now for non-operational wear, the CFA won't even allow uniform shorts for the career members, the MFB does, and they look smat and comfortable. Big-boy pants?

The CFA have issued all career members and vols with shorts as part of the structural PPC issue. The shorts are only to be worn on station in the gym. So they issued them to vols, whose stations don't have gym rooms/equipment? No matter, we seem to grab them to put on when turning out from bed in the middle of the night, they work well for that ;o)

Back to the OP - something to remember when organising a ride along? Ask the people at that organisation what you are required to wear. From here you've received some good advise, but just ask the people who KNOW, the people you are making the arrangement with.

Under PPE/PPC being the key there Tony. But as a stand alone item to wear- no way!
Sorry Paul- I'll stop now.

I just think we sometimes need to take a moment to think about what we're doing or going to be doing.

As a paramedic, this member is potentially going to spend time kneeling on the ground with a wide range of contaminants from body fluids, car fluids, etc, along with differing terrain ranging from grass, ashphalt, dirt, rocks, glass, etc.

To me it's a no brainer- shorts have no place in this type of job IMHO....
Your absolutely right, Paul. I thought about that after I posted my response...

So scratch the HIV example and say....the Ebola virus?

We just were OK'd to wear shorts in May and several other FT depts in the state also have duty shorts and we do EMS. I've heard the same debates for years and to be honest, just wearing pants doesn't always protect someone either. Personally, I don't know of anyone I work with who has knelt down, but will squat keeping both feet on the ground. Since we are FF's and have turnouts on the ambulances if the call sounds like it may be bloody like a shooting/stabbing, it takes a few seconds to put on bunker pants.

The decison for shorts does come down to a personal opinion and dept policy, but here most of us love the shorts option.
Not only for protection....I don't think shorts portrays professionalism.....

Your opinion, but there are many, many depts that do have duty shorts and some well known and respected depts like FDNY.
I don't have an issue for around the station, but not in the field (except udner PPE, Tony!).
I remember the first scene I did live CPR on - I happened to respond from my random community location - in shorts - and as I was kneeling on the floor doing CPR, I turned just so and CUT my leg open on the hard cased oxygen case someone placed close to me - so now my bare leg was bleeding ON SCENE... as I was trying to do CPR... primarily because I did not have long pants on which would have prevented the injury or at least been soaking up the blood, instead of having my blood pouring all over the patient's living room floor... interrupting my ability to provide patient care.

If you wear shorts, you must be more careful, because you are exposing more of your personal skin. The military does not wear shorts in Iraq., which is much hotter than here.
I think it's being agreed that shorts can be fine for station wear (or all year, everywhere, for a Vol like me) but should not be worn to an incident unless under PPC? Yes there are those that don't like shorts, I won't force them to wear shorts. Some fire services do allow them as station wear, so why should members of those services not wear them?
