I've grown up in the fire house, and have been an explorer for the past 3 years. While there are some people that get "grumpy." Most of the time, if you have an older FF upset with you, you did something wrong. Its just what I've seen. Also, if you are a good explorer a lot of vets really treat you well.
I don't remember but either FireRescue magazine or FireEngineering Magazine puts out Nozzle Head. He has a good sized list of things every probie or explorer should do. We have a large copy hung at our explorer training post.
We have an understanding with our High school that allows our student members to respond during school hours. Ist, they must be 18, 2nd pagers are keep int eh ibrate alert mode to minize the distraction, 3nd they are exempt from signing out, due to time factor but must check in on retrun, but another student must notify the main office they have left. 4th the student must maintain good standing with their grades. The school admin and the dept have open communication and it works. Our day time response would not meet the minumin for ISO without these student members. We are lucky as this is a result of a ROP Fire Academeny in which students enroll in a semster long EMT and year long Fire class which our state has recongized as meeting the FFI training. Our benefit is we get 18 yr olds who can step in as new members and have already had all the basic training.
