I know that I am going to stir the pot so to speak....BUT..It hasn't ever bothered me in the past so why should it now...?  I am wondering why someone hasn't set up a bridge program for people with medical training so that they can work in EMS.  I know they would have to learn protocols and field skills but there is a vast resource of untapped personnel for EMS in MD's, RN's, PA's, and Nurse Practicioners....I know many are Nationally Certified in CCRN or CERN and have training as trauma specialist....these people donot need to learn  how to do a Blood Pressure or pt assessment or for that matter even how to do IV's...they just need exposure to our world and our protocols.....Just a thought....we have never had too many people in the field...under the current system they don't want to get involved because they have to start with the very basics....hard to justify going back to the basics when you have a degree and a license to practice medicine......Thanks...Stay safe...Keep the Faith............Paul

AMEN... MY WIFE WAS A SEASONED RN NURSE SUPERVISOR IN A LARGE HOSPITAL EMERGENGY DEPARTMENT FOR 17 YEARS... OBVIOUSLY... EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS A PLENTY... NOT BEING ABLE TO FALL INTO A PROGRAM FOR DELIVERY OF FIELD LEVEL ALS OR BLS AS A VOLENTEER IN A COMMUNITY WTHOUT THE HASSELS OF SOME OVERWHELMING BASIC TRAINING PROTOCALS KEEPS SOME PERSPECTIVE CARE GIVERS FROM CONTRIBUTING TO A SYSTEM SUCH AS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DELIVERY OF BLS IN MANY COMMUNITIES.
A BRIDE PROGRAM OR SOMETHING LIKE IT SHOULD BE DEVELOPED... OR AT LEAST THE SUCESSFULL ONES THAT EXIST SHOULD BE MODELED SO OTHERS CAN COPY IT TO MEET THEIR LOCAL NEEDS.
Chief...Never really thought about that part...but then again most of our EMS people are also Firefighters we train quite frequently with our neighboring Departments...both EMS and Fire...we pretty much know the capabilities of each...
Just my point Tommy....I am a Nurse (RN) and I run BLS because that's what our Department has...but I see some calls where I just want to scream "Give me the needle, I will get the IV stated." Then somebody that has about as much time doing pt care as I have on the toilet informs he that he is ALS certified and that I can't because I am not....I know...rules are rules....and I do abide by them (most of the time)
Chief...it is a vast opportunity for both sides of the equation....and it promotes teamwork which in my book is invaluable in this field
Ralph....I have been EMT certified since age 17 and now I am also an RN...No I don't get paid for medic (Vollie),,,I know a few RN's/Medics that didn't work "the streets in a car" (they might have worked a street corner.....LOL) (I'm going to pay for that one....LOL) I just think we might be able to get some quality people to help out.....thanks for the input.....Paul
