Anyone can ride a Fire Engine, blow the siren and even "dress up"in some bunker gear... But it is TRAINING that helps turn that "anyone " into a Firefighter Who Actually Has A Clue,On What To Actually Do..
I agree. It's always the same ones - in our case thankfully they're the same ones that turn out all the time too! Some of the longer serving members seem to think that they don't need to train as they've been doing it for years and years. They are the ones I don't really like to work with...
when i was in trhe fire academy there was a retired fire chief that would stop by every now and then, he said he was in a training class 3 days before he retired

Bruce Lee had a quote about martial arts training that I have always thought applied to fire training too, something along the lines that "You die in the dojo 1,000 times to survive once on the street." To me this means practice and make your mistakes in the station/training area and you will more likely get the job done correctly on scene when you may have just one chance and lives are on the line.
And I have come to the realization that when you train someone you are simply educating them with the knowledge they need to do the job and stay safe while doing it. They have to WANT to do it right or the training is mostly wasted on that individual.
