whats your thoughts on this situation

heres a pic for everyone to give me there thoughts on it.i have been tring to talk safety to this kid but he doesnt seem to listen.i think that its poor judgemenet plus the kid is a jr firefighter and i dont agree with him on the hoseline

Want my real thoughts on this? You may not like the answer...

This is probably a direct reflection of your department's leadership. For which the powers to be do not really care about the memebers safety. When I go out and consult with fire departments for cultural changes, there are simple red flags that without ever saying a word spell out the department's mindset.

How do you handle this specific incident? Well he is a child, and who are the adults? How do you correct the underlying issue of this being acceptable? (it happened, and is now all over the internet so it is precieved by the troops as acceptable) Well that is a deep rooted issue that needs to be addressed within the leadership first and proven with leadership by example.

My reason for posting this topic is to show how careless some people can be.the firefighter in question isn't a member of my department.he is a firefighter in a different department.if he was a member of my department i would have made it clear that he get time away from the station for his actions.

I think you're missing the point. First, the kid is not a firefighter - assuming he's the one you're talking about. Second, the kid, in my opinion, is virtually blameless. It's the leadership that is to be held accountable for what is going on in this photo.

i see what you mean after reading all the post on this topic.the leadership within his department isnt there.
i think that this is something that in hope never happens in someone elses fire district.

That's the image I get when I think about this "fire dept"'s operations.

Where's the Chief. If they allow personnel to operate like this it might be a sign of bigger problems.

I should appologise. I didn't mean to include the whole dept.
It just so happened that the right people weren't there at the time.
But on the other hand, someone is supposed to be teaching right from wrong and enforcing said teachings.
Wasn't there. Don't know the story.
Still have to say that the pic don't look right.
Also, you still didn't say who was operating the pump!

i wasnt on the call i was out of town at a training when i got the text from a guy from my station telling me that our tower was next due and i was missing the the fire.im glad that i missed it.
i am not sure who is the the pump operator on the engine.
derek no need to appologise.this is a poor judgement by the department in question for allowing this to happen.when i saw this i wasnt to impressed with the the lack of ppe

Wonder if Ed Mann will use this in his next fire service address with why PA in the past has lead the LODD statistics for volunteers in the USA.
