Without getting into the pro's and con's of having junior firefighter / fire explorer involvement,  I read a post that discussed a topic that police have been attempting to get removed off the internet. While I realize that the is the USA, where we have freedom of speech, this is not my concern at all. What I don't like is seeing certain discussions, created by adults, and participated by minors.

One recent link on homemade chemical bombs went into detail on how to make one of your own. However, law enforcement folks feel differently. One internet article I read stated:

"Police in Japan are urging internet service providers to block websites which publish instructions on how to produce the hydrogen sulfide gas."

It's not that I have anything against juniors or explorers, it's just that some of the materials presented here on the FFN are not suitable, in my opinion, for children. It's not that the material cannot be easily found on the internet. It is the point that they shouldn't learn here on the FFN how to do things that could hurt themselves or others. Remember, we are talking about children here, not adults.

Children are not done maturing and often times make decisions that just don't make sense. We should not be their enablers. People should post responsibly because children are openly allowed to participate in discussions with adults.

If a junior / explorer tried something at home that they learned here on the FFN, and was hurt or killed in the process, would there be any legal ramifications for the person who posted the materials or the FFN?

Maybe it's time to consider restricting access to those over the age of 18?

Anyone else feel the same way?  Am I being too overcautious here?

For once, I agree with the W/C.
Adult problem 'child'....hmmmmm wonder what qualifies one for that designation.
I'm guessing four arms.
LOL phunny...
Then take this as your first lesson JUNIOR. Type your posts in Word and then use spell check. The lack of capitalization, spelling and grammar are appalling. Stay in school, learn to spell and shut up and listen on here. There are some people on here with a ton of knowledge that they share for free. Soak it up, with your mouth shut.
Actually Nathan, there is a big difference between the required education one receives in a school (reading, writing, science, math, etc) and that to learn the trade of a firefighter. Why else is it that a fire program is offered at colleges and not high schools? Because firefighting is not a requirement.

The fire service is not going anywhere and there really is no reason for a child to have to learn the aspects of the fire service. It is fine and great to have a vested interest and to have a goal, but reality is that it is not a requirement for anyone here to teach a kid. All things change when the child turns that magic age of 18 and can make decisions as an adult and determine to become a certified firefighter. It is at that point when there is a vested interest from a senior firefighter to pass on the knowledge to the new firefighter. Please don't confuse a standard education with that of the fire service.
Nathan (see, I address you by your name rather than just start a sentence),

School is indeed for education and for children. It is required of you to be there, at least til age 16.

No, this site is NOT part of your education. It is NOT required nor is it necessary, it is solely voluntary on your part. But like many things, what may be good or right for an adult may not be so for a child.

No one is blocking you from your education, go to school and learn. But what makes you think you have a RIGHT to be here? Actually, NONE of us do, we are here at the pleasure of the site owners.

And you are mistaken, just because I happen to be an adult in no way implies or confers on me any responsibility to teach anyone, much less a child. And someone that is younger than me is not necessarily a child and I know of no children that are older than me. (Your sentence structure leaves a lot to be desired.)

As to your statement about a child learning form the best, what makes you think anyone or everyone in here is the best, good or most knowledgeable?

Your problem (and that of many other 'juniors') is that you feel entitled to be part of the adult community, part of the fire department and think/demand/expect to be treated as an equal. Wrong on all accounts kid. I know of a lot of firefighters (most, in fact) that became a firefighter as an adult. They all (myself included) seem to be doing fine. In other words, NONE of us have suffered any setback as a result of having never been a junior or explorer. The point? It is NOT necessary to be a 'junior' to become a firefighter. Is it easier? Maybe, maybe not but it certainly is NOT needed.
Just my humble opinion.
P.s. Use spell check and practice your grammar and punctuation, there are a number of mistakes and if I HAD to give your paragraph a grade, C-.
P.p.s I suggest you look up the word tautology.
not sure what the qualifications might be, but I do know what kind of vehicle they drive in...

dont be such an ass i nwas a junior firefighter until i was 16 and then was bumped up to a full member after that. at 18 i became interior after i finished my firefighter one. during thoses 2 years i was a very valuble asset to my department so dont try and say kids are stupid or anything like that. get a life and pick on someone ur own age
Yes, we are suppose to teach you, and you are suppose to learn. You obviously failed to read my post supporting jrs/explores. If you had read it then I would like to assume that you would not have added your little jab (sense you THINK you know best) and it is since not sense. It is those kind of remarks, from both sides (fairly) that are at the core issue I feel. A wise instructor once told me, "Words mean something!" Instead of allowing the continual "Whaaah" come out of your mouth and posturing statements, concentrate on what is the issue.

I am honestly quickly becoming frustrated with the lack of respect from many people on this web site, and there is no specific age group that I am refering too. I think that I am going to step away for a bit. I know that my measly postings and occasional input is insignificant to most but come on, really? I think that a few of us should also step back re-assess what we are doing then step back up to the plate. Save all of this posturing statements for other social sites. Go and make your farmville the biggest and best, come here to make a difference!
Adam, I'm curious as to who exactly you are calling an ass.
ouch...

but wait... aren't we the ones who actually pay for things? juniors and explorers presumably are not adults nor are they involved in the workplace.

but wait... the bottom of this pages states the following:

"This site is intended for use by current and former fire, rescue & EMS professionals."

To be a current or former fire, rescue & EMS professional, one has to be a minimum age of 18... so now that the site intentions include juniors and explorers as one of the focal points, depending on whether school is in session, perhaps the footer should be changed to:

"This site is intended for use by current and former fire, rescue & EMS professionals and Junior Firefighter's."

When you put it into words, it just does not look right... right?
