What's Your Craziest Example of Dumb Citizens? The Modern Evacuation -- Take Some Video, Get Your Hand Stamped

Our friends over at STATter911 have a great story along with video and photos from a fire today at the Detroit Auto Show.

During the "evacuation" (if you want to call it that) folks took their leisurely time to exit the building despite the smoke and arriving firefighters -- taking photos, videos, and yes even getting their hand stamped INSIDE the building before they left so that they could get back in. Some pretty wacky stuff.

Which leads us to the question of the day -- Besides commenting on the this story, what are some crazy things you've seen where Joe Citizen has failed to exit rapidly in times of emergency, before you've arrived or while you're there trying to help them escape.

Watch the video...especially towards the end where you can see the hand stamping, and for more read the full story at STATter911.

Besides the video...in which I just shake my head and think "job security"....I also wonder about the focus of our fire prevention efforts. Had this been a kid type of show, the kids most likely would have left in a nice orderly fashion, meanwhile adults forget what they learned as kids.....as well as they forgot to learn from history.

So another incident which comes to mind is a month or so ago there was video on CNN of Stevie Wonder receiving an award and during his speech, the fire alarm goes off....not a single person moved.

Last year before a Packer game, the fire alarm notification sounded telling people to evacuate the stadium....lots of looking around and even the "What do we do?" questions....Ummm, hello.....leave the damn stadium.

I get a kick out of the mentality shown here...."oh smoke....lets go near it" Wow, just wow.
Our local electric co-op has a large hall that they rent out and every time were toned out for an alarm there, the idiots are still partying likes it's no big deal! Then there's the host who thinks their God telling you it's OK, we don't need the fire department.

Same thing with the grocery store, the alarm is an ear buster and people are still trying to shop there not budging, and have the attitude of, how dare you interrupt my shopping time!
Supermarkets have to take the cake.
I have observed a supermarket manager apologising across their PA system for the annoying alarm and encouraging the shoppers to please ignore the alarm and continue their shopping.
This was despite the fact that his staff had told him they had a fire out back of the deli!
WTF??
I was in the store on other business and had to direct him to order the evacuation.
We were called to our local golf course for an m.i. The pro met us at the entrance and asked if we could walk in to the eigtht hole so as not to damge the course. Our captain told him we woulod stick to the service road.obviously not a relative of the pro having the m.i.
When we got there however we had to pull the rescue on to the fairway to shelter us from the concerned golfers "playing through " , We actually ended up with a dent on the rescue from a ball! Guess golfers have their priorities.
I just watched the video and all I can say is, Are you kidding me???
As John said: All I can think is "job security"!
Craziest civilians....? I would put the Judge that made the ruling that every 3 out of 5 hires the FDNY hires have to be minority at the top of that list.....what a dope...!!!.....I will take the best qualified anyday...No matter race, color, creed or gender....PERIOD.
On the flip Kali, such videos and examples stated do show a great concern and challenge which faces us. Some people obviously don't take the warnings too serious so why continue to sugar coat things? Majority of these issues come from adults who should know better, but still react this way. If people were to read such comments then it can also be a wake up call to respond accordinly when there are such issues. After all, it is examples like this, the person who doesn't leave their apartment when it is on fire, the person going back in to a fire for whatever and so forth which create the challenges we face everyday. Despite our fire prevention messages, fires happen with the leading causes still retaining their top spots. Despite our messages like "get out stay out" etc, we still read about fire deaths because people refused to leave or went back inside. Maybe if Joe Public did read this thread and did find offense, then perhaps Joe Public will think in the future of such examples and act accordinly, instead of like this example.
We run into this sort of thing at the mall in our area all the time. Bells, whistles, lights and sirens don't make a difference. Heaven forbid someone loses his place in line.
We had an active fire in the void space on the front fascia of a restaurant one time. The owner of the restaurant came out and asked us to cut the lights off on the apparatus because it was scaring customers away.

On another call we responded to a bar for a reported kitchen fire. We arrived to find moderate smoke coming from the rear roof area. When I walked inside all the patrons were still drinking away. When I told the manager to evacuate he said "Do we really have to? There's no smoke in the bar area, just the kitchen."
Responded to a factory where employees get paid by the piece. Factory loaded with a heavy haze of smoke. employees still at machines trying to complete more pieces. (cough, cough, polish, cough, gag, polish, cough, cough, cough) Employees would not leave. Also a language barrier. We would get some employees out and they would try to get back in other doors.
Stupid People = Job Security! Stay safe!
