For those of you who believe there is no racism or discrimination in America's Fire departments, think again. Poor Man's Lotto: Memoirs of a Black Firefighter in America brings to light the racial predjudices that are still part of this courageous group of men. Now only if they can find the courage to face their discriminatory practices. As Former Director of Emergency Services and Homeland Security, it disturbs me greatly and deeply that this continues to be a norm in this agency. Hopefully, Poor Man's Lotto will open not only your eyes but also your minds. Personally, I would be scared to go into a hazardous environment knowing how some of you really feel about Blacks!
Your right. I dont know why Pete would do something like this. Its sad for a person to take a stand so firm against something that has nothing to do with him. Look, lets face it we all have issues and another thing you said was right. Pete has pissed alot of people off, Including me...... I do know him, but I dont know why he would take to this level. I've read everything from everybody and I think we should just leave the situation alone. Im going to ask all fellow firefighters to not respond to Pete. I am not happy about any of this and it will be dealt with. This is not even about my book anymore, this has become very personal. Lets all be bigger then the situation. We run into burning buildings to save people lives and like I said hes not a firefighter so he dont understand. I've never been afraid to speak my mind and yes I do talk about race issues but I make it very clear it the book that not all firefighters feel that way. I sorry that my book has caused all of this. I will talk to Pete..... Stay safe everyone....
should I comment....should I not comment.....should I comment.....should I not comment..........eenie meenie miney moe. Well.....the moe says I should comment, but my gut tells me I shouldn't. Darnit all. Oh well....safer if I don't comment. what a disturbing thread.

Ernest, thanks for the reply. It has come to be my opinion that Peter's posts here never were about your book. Instead, he used your book, and his involvement in it, to spur his own agenda in this post. Again, thanks. Stay safe.
Yea I agree with Doug, Lutan1 and others. It looked like it was a discussion about racism, then Peter kind of took off on a tangent, somewhat frothing at the mouth and alienated a lot of people. Too bad because an open discussion could have been productive. On the other hand, it did bring to light your book, so it can't be all bad.
I shoud apologize for my comments earlier...sort of got my dander up....I did NOT mean any insinuations toward my Brothers/Sisters by my tirade....They have proven themselves numerous times in their chosen profession.....I just wonder how many times the poster used the "D" word in getting where he has been and where he is now.......Stay safe all...and always remember to Keep the Faith......Paul (I will NOT respond to anything further here..it isn't worth my time or effort..)
I read the Man's profile.....forget it...He clearly has not a clue....A paper pusher...never even got his hands dirty....Face it, not worth anothr response and I am sure he assurred that no-one will read the book now.....Paul
Well regardless of the outcome or how this started. This has been one of the most passionate disscussions as of late and has generated some worth while comments.
Regardless of how the poster ment for this post. I would just like to say THANK YOU. It was a very welcome disscussion.
Yeah, I guess I sounded pretty racist there but think about it. They can get what ever they want. All they have to do is work for it the same as you and I but alot of them want stuff handed to them. I'm not talking about the entire black race. We have people who are just as bad. They just don't go public with it. I have many black friends that I worked with over the years and have no problem with them. It's like what was already said, racism goes both ways and Pete has proven it by his replies. I know the blacks had a hard time in the past and that was really unfair, but they have just as much freedom as we do now and they (some) act like they want more. It's like I said, when I worked in the factory, if a black person got wrote up by a foreman than the foreman was a racist. I even heard a black foreman get called a racist for writing up a black person. What sense does that make??? I have nothing against blacks what-so-ever, just the ones who bring up a book and then get mad at people for some of their replies.
Jeff, dang bro. We wont be able to live with Loyd now. Just swelled his head up. LOL
On a serious note: I watched and read this discussion from beginning to now and I have to say that I am extremely proud of you guys for how your discussions/responses were good and on the level. All except the the poster. It did appear that he was walking around with a chip on his shoulder and was looking to stir things up or promote the book. You guys handled this extremely well. I am proud of your professionalism and solidarity. Well done Ladds! You made me proud!
