Art, you better than most is aware that unless they areactually self-aware (as opposed to the more prevalent self-absorbed, self-involved, etc) they will never recognize themselves. Some people JUST DON'T GET IT.

Which is why I recommend PEEPs! You simply can't beat them for stress relief. Go buy a batch, bat them around and see if you don't feel gooder. Or...eat them. A sugar coma can be restful.

We are not paid to think that ANY call is "awesome". Sick or injured people are not awesome. People trapped in car wrecks are not awesome. People's homes, businesses, or vehicles going up in flames are not awesome. Hazardous materials leaking into the environment are not awesome.

If there's such a thing as an "awesome" call, it might be the uncomplicated delivery of a healthy baby, but even that is painful for the mother, due to the lack of anaesthesia for field deliveries.

Why would you think that ANY call that involves injury or economic loss to someone else is "awesome"?

Worse call I can remember was years back. I was at home and my fire company was on a working fire in the next area and was just picking up hose when a house fire came in just up the street from where I live. The covering fire company had left and were almost back to their station but communications pass over them and called fire companies farther out to run the call or stations clearing the working fire. I got in my car and drove up to the street and parked my car away from the scene and ran up the driveway. The house was more of a shack that two elderly brothers lived in and the rest of the family lived in a trailer home. When I got there the old house was on the ground and the brothers couldn't be found.
I got on the family's phone and called told 911 I was on the scene, the house was on the ground and the no one could be found that lived in it.
The first unit got there was our brush unit and then the first company communications called and started knocking down the fire. The rest of my company got there and one of our members said he will find them by smelling the burned skin. They did find the brothers one under a window and the other where the bedroom was. I was so worked up that they thought I was having a heart attack because of how hard I was breathing. I calmed down enough to walk out to a ambulance to get two sheets to cover the bodies until the fire investigators got there.
Were there for awhile until companies started clearing and investigations started. I finally got back in my car and went to the station for clean up and then home.

I guess the only awesome day for you is when you get to hide in your chief's office and not interact with the community we pledge to serve.
That comment is uncalled for. What Ben was saying is that it ISN'T "awesome" from the victim perspective and if YOU think it's "awesome" what we do, I would remind you that firefighters and EMS aren't the only ones who are members here.
I would let others grade us as "awesome" and we should keep those thoughts to ourselves.
Saying that we did an awesome job at a fire or a wreck is one thing; saying that we ARE awesome is quite another.
You may have to learn to play well with others; at least here.
And I must say that your profile is awesome.
