Brennan Griffin, executive director of the ACORN Institute, said the group received a $450,484 fire prevention FEMA grant last year for a pilot program to help low- and moderate-income families in five cities: Providence, R.I.; Hartford, Conn.; Washington, D.C.; Albuquerque, N.M., and Wilmington, Del. The purpose, he said, was to "conduct in-home assessments of fire safety issues in the houses of low- and moderate-income families."

this is the link for the whole artical that quote was about half way down

this is bull i mean that money could be better used doing oh i dont know how about making fire companys that need more up to date equipment

FEMA FIRE PREVENTION GRANT MONEY

The way grant money should be used is for what it is intended for. In this case, the grant money should be for Fire PREVENTION, not for more up to date equipment.
Not sure why you are doing the OP's leg work, but oh well. I read this as a grant made to the organization LAST YEAR, if that is the case why is there a gripe today about it?

Now I agree that such money should be given to such fire departments own PREVENTION program, but ACORN has some good grant writers too. Thing is many fire departments when faced with cuts tend to cut fire prevention programs first or downsize them so much they are basically ineffective. Partnering up with such a group to address fire prevention issues, especially in lower income households, could be a means for such departments to address some issues. As I mentioned to another person, the grant money would be specifically for fire prevention, if a dept has only one or a couple people in the prevention division, there is only so much they can do.
lol i do legwork because i am very into politics and i enjoy it lol i caught interest because i new of in the past week acorn getting cut off but ya i agree with you on the

Because there is recent evidence that ACORN contributes massively to fraud and waste of federal funds and other corruption and we need to make sure that this grant award is not more of the same, maybe?
i remember that this grant was involved in the investigations but lets face it if they help pimps and whores launder money who needs em
I agree ben, but if this grant was awarded LAST year, why the gripe about it today? Had all the recent events come to light last year and ACORN was STILL awarded the grant...I'm all for griping. However, the money was awarded last year, what's done is done.
The whole thing about ACORN is out on the edge, I think. The organization is very effective at accomplishing it's core goals. They work with poor people. Poor people have the most fires, fire deaths, and fire injuries. All of that other crap is blown out of proportion. The voter fraud complaints are noise, kind of like how women always accuse the husband of abuse in the divorce. It's just background noise, nobody ever gets prosecuted. The embezzlement happened ten years ago. TEN! We see embezzlement in fire departments every month or so.

If the very conservative Washington Times wanted to know what ACORN was going to use the grant for, they could have asked to see the grant proposal under the Freedom of Information Act. Conservatives attack ACORN because ACORN is good at what they do - working with poor people who vote for democrats.

Fire service organizations across the country face legal and moral problems every day. Nobody paints us with a giant broad brush. Nobody says my fire department should be denied funds because of fraud in the next town over. No one has yet suggested that girls and women should stay out of every fire station because of what may have happened in Atlantic City. Nobody thinks that we are all killers because of what happened in Jackson.

Let's focus on the real issue, why is ACORN doing our job without us? Why isn't the fire service applying for the big fire prevention grants? Why aren't we more interested in helping the poor, the old, and the very young, BEFORE the fire starts? Why aren't the more giant state-wide grants being requested by fire-service organizations? Why don't we have our acts together and who let that million dollars get out the back door?

Let's focus on the real problem and not get drug into a partisian battle.
HEY MAN.. STEP AWAY FROM THE KOOLAID AND WIPE OFF WHAT YOUR SPILLED ON YOUR TURNOUT COAT...

YOUR POSSESION OF THE FACTS ON THIS MATTER IS TROUBLING... GET THE INFO ON ACORN AND COME BACK AND SHARE YOUR LEARNED VIEWS WITH US WHEN YOU REALIZE WHAT LEVEL OF CORRUPTION EXIST WITH THIS OUTFIT...
Actually, it's not. Check out East Point, GA, which had to pay their FIRE grant back with interest five years after it was awarded. The cause - not complying with the grant conditions. If the organization can be shown to be corrupt, then the money needs to come back no matter in what year the mistake was made.
Regardless of your "politics", ACORN should not apply for nor receive ANY grant monies from grant programs that includes the word "FIRE".
If they want money to buy smoke detectors and batteries and hand them out to low income, then let them apply for grants from Wal-Mart, Target or the Lions' Club.
If THEY get our money, then WE don't get our money.
I personally know of departments who applied for FP and S grants that were turned down.
The "giant" grants are being applied for. However; the rules change EVERY year; therefore, it's a moving target and the program is designed more for organizations LIKE ACORN who can snake their way through the process with questionable information and win.
Personally, whoever recommended them for funding would never review another FIRE Act grant in my lifetime.
Completely inexcusable.
The problem with your argument is that politics has EVERYTHING to do with it.
And it always has.
