In my Past, I have been an EMT and Firefighter 1 for the state of Colorado. Both volunteer systems. I am now looking at obtaining my degree in fire science, specializing in arson investigation. I live in a remote location in Colorado, so a formal college is not an option. does anyone have any suggestions and recommendations of schools to go thru? Also, is this goal viable? is there a market for these skills?

Thanks for the help

Not an expert in any way here, but if a formal college is not an option for you, then how do you specialize in arson investigation? I don't know if there is an online only type of program that you could do, because in reality there should be hands on training also.

Now there may be online programs to get your degree in fire science, but not sure about the specialization part. I would look into the closest technical type of college and there may be some classes offered close by where you could attend, or if anything talk with a person at the school about your goals.

The arson investigator stuff I would suggest looking into the National Fire Academy, there are many classes in investigation offered out there. There are also countless resources offered through the NFA and would definately be something to look into.

As for a market for the skills? I don't know, you may be able to find a job with a career dept as such, but it depends. A friend of mine is an investigator for Aurora, CO FD and is not a sworn FF, but was hired as an investigator.
Thanks for the reply. I was looking at possible online classes or corrospendence classes just to get more of the basics down. Then look at more technical classes for arson.

It's a website set up by the International association of Arson Investigators. Good site, great information.
Check with your local fire investigator and also check into your state chapter of IAAI International Association Arson Investigators. I am sure a member will be able to help you in your quest, will have suggestions and help steer you in the right direction.
I belong to my state chapter and each year they offer outstanding courses.

You can check with the National Fire Academy in Emittsburg, MD.

Good luck, stay safe, train often & share knowledge.
