Hello,
I had been on and off of anti-depressants for a while for anxiety. I realize that I should have dealt with my problems without the use of medication. Hindsight is 20/20. Now I need to know if/how this will affect employment with a fire department. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Thomas Lund

I'm not sure why you say you should have dealt with your problems without the use of medication. Maybe, maybe not. If your anxiety is from an identifiable cause which can be effectively treated with therapy, then fine. Some people have a internal chemical imbalance causing anxiety, as do some with depression. A very wise, experienced doctor once put it this way..."nobody looks crossly at the person who takes insulin to keep their blood sugar under control, put they think there is something wrong mentally with the person who takes an anti-depressant. Both people are taking a drug to balance an imbalance within their body which they have no control over."

I don't think there is any reason you should be ashamed of addressing your problems by the means you deem (or a specialist deems) necessary. That being said, I am in no way qualified to tell you how that will affect you in a paid department interview, as I am a volunteer and don't know the ropes, but there's many on here who do and I'm sure they'll help...I just wanted to give you my opinion on your previous treatment...good luck.
I appreciate the response. I stated that I realize I should have dealt with it on my own, for the simple fact that I was pretty sure I'd be told that I should have, as many people are told on other forums. I figured I'd just get it out of the way. You're the first one I've seen that seems to understand about this medication. I couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks again. :-)
Sincerely,
Thomas Lund
If you were looking to go into the military, this may be an issue. However, the fire service is more leinant and each dept sets their standards. I agree with Blair here.
Yeah I was going to join the Marine Corps, but was informed that for any branch I have to be off of them for a year, and then I can enlist. Okay, I'll be sure to check it out with specific departments I'm interested in. As of now I'm looking for a department to volunteer with. Thank you guys again.
Sincerely,
Thomas Lund
