PHOENIX - 14 people were injured last night in a collision involving seven vehicles, one of which was a Phoenix fire engine.
A captain with the Phoenix Fire Department is listed in critical condition after she was ejected following the collision. Authorities state that a vehicle traveling northbound on the Interstate 17 off-ramp entered the Dunlap Avenue intersection, striking the responding fire engine.
The collison sent the apparatus onto the westbound lanes of Dunlap Avenue, where it struck six other vehicles, finally coming to rest against a van.
The 49-year old captain was found face down in the road, unconcious. She was transported to a local hospital and has reportedly undergone surgery for a head injury. The fire engine was responding to a call with its lights and siren activated.
Witnesses say that the vehicle which reportedly caused the collision was driving fast and had run the red light.
