Detroit Ladder Truck Loses Control, Strikes Cars: Caught on Tape

DETROIT - A run by a Detroit fire crew on the city's southwest side took a turn for the worse Tuesday evening.
Investigators said the surveillance camera from Dollar Max Plus shows the driver of the rig takes the right turn at a high speed and misses his lane. He then plows into a vehicle waiting at the light on Vernor Street and then slams into a Pontiac G6, sending it flying nearly 50 feet, before coming to a stop.
"He is a crazy driver. He wants to hurry, and he got beside him (the driver of the Pontiac G6) and he put it off on the street," said Dollar Max Plus owner Bawsam Safedi.
The two people inside the Pontiac G6 were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle that was hit first was not injured. Also, none of the three firefighters inside the rig were injured.
Local 4 has learned that the firefighter behind the wheel has been with the department for more than 10 years and has traveled the same route many times.
The Detroit Fire Department will only say it is investigating the crash. Local 4 has learned the driver of the rig underwent drug and alcohol testing Tuesday evening.
Investigators said it's common procedure to undergo those types of tests during crash investigations.

As a Ladder 13 fire truck, with the sirens blaring, turned from Lawndale Road onto West Vernor Street, and crashed into two vehicles, a surveillance camera from a nearby party store rolled.Investigators said the surveillance camera from Dollar Max Plus shows the driver of the rig takes the right turn at a high speed and misses his lane. The obvious factors; speed & and; driving abililty. If his brakes locked up, where's the smoke (at that speed there should have been) and with locked up brakes he wouldn't have been able to make the turn like he did. Lets wait and see. I wager it's not the truck. What say you? Let's be thankful it wasn't worse!

The worst part is that the whole department is now lit by the blazing fire of scrutiny. Even if the driver is cleared, the maintenance department will be condemned for an equipment failure. What a PR nightmare for Detroit FD!

What I see here is someone just served up a great big sh_t sandwhich and a vehicle operator and Officer in charge are each going to have to take a big bite....remember EVOV...(tha basics again)...I don't think they hepled either the call they had been dispatched to or their careers.....STAY SAFE.....remember to keep the faith......Paul

What gets drilled into your head during Pump-Ops class..?? "Excuses are like a__holes...we all have them and they all stink." (not an original..taken from an old supervisor in the service)... Paul

I would ask that you actually read my post, Paul. There were no "excuses" therein.
Nor were there any assumptions since, as you know, making assumptions makes
an ASS out of U and ME.
You might consider, Paul, that "this (as posted)" on this website is not any kind of
official or unofficial conclusion to any kind of investigation. All posting are mere
speculations that consist of individual's opinions and EVERYONE has a right to
theirs.
I, personally, have no opinion about the cause of the accident and therefore have

if you look at the yeawl marks you can plainly see that the tires where still in rotation.

If you took EVOC...it is the Operator and the Officer in charge (mainly Operator) that is responsible for what happens....only investigation would involve whether it was negligence and to what degree....even if there are no "tickets" involved there will probably be a Civil lawsuit....I will put my paycheck on it that someone will be paying a lot of money out...Paul
