It seems every time my husband(LT) and I are going to a family gathering we hear are tones go off everytime were on our way or fixing to sit down to eat. How does your family members react? Just remember as a volunteer its 24/7 365. My hats off to our family members. What are some of your holiday experiences?
I am a captain on a small department that has manpower issues from time to time so I kind of feel obligated to respond to everything i can. thankfully i have an understanding family that is ok if I am late or cant show up to gatherings. I never turn my pager off because of that obligated feeling that I get which usually burns me out pretty quick. last year we ran 378 calls and I responded to 205 of them, the ones I missed are the calls that came in while I was at work and couldnt leave. Today we ran four calls in three hours so far, so it has been a busy holiday.
i am a vol for Dunbar VFC we had a structure fire and a MVA yesterday on the 4th and the night before we had 2 MVA's one with entrapment. my family dosen't mind becasue they all use to be or are still fireman and my girlfriend is a lady aux member.
All quiet for us yesterday. Our neighbors had some runs out the wazoo though. One had a single vehicle wreck with 6 patients transported, 1 critical. Another neighbor had a burner right in the middle of a severe thunderstorm. Thankfully a neighbor knocked most of it down with a fire extinguisher... I don't think I'd want to be on a 2 story 3500sq. house in the middle of thunder and lighting. It's happened with us before, just not a house of that size
my family at first didnt understand it and some still dont. I dont pick and chose calls i make the ones i can make usually miss most cause i cant leave work. and holiday experience 3 alarm fire called in as mutal aid around midnight and didnt leave till 4 am fell asleep in the truck on the way home then still had to clean up.
my family dont like but they understand i have to go the only time i shut my radio an pager off is when im at a funeral an when im at church i turn the radio off but put the pager on vibrate but other than that i keep em on
Dedication is great.....but you already said it its volunteer. While the fire service is my passion and alot of other peoples you have to have other interests as well.
A few years ago befor my son's were born I lived it and breathed it. I would work a 24 @ my career FD job.....leave there and go strait to the VFD pull duty until 6pm when the nite time duty crew came on....then get up to work another 24 at the career job the next day. After a while it burnt me out.....Now I dont vollie and I have never been happier I get plenty of work at my career job (my station is seeing 7,000 calls a year) and I work for a small part time FD wich maybe runs a call a day.
Just dont let it consume your life I missed out on alot of things cause the vollie house was "more important" at the time.
I couldn't agree with you more, there has to be a balance and I am slowly learning that although I still really enjoy spending time with my FD family I make more time for my family. Sometimes you think you will get your family involved and its just not what they want.
