A firefighters union official says he's offended by comments by Muncie's mayor that firefighters left "filth" behind in a recently closed fire station.
Fire Union President Mike Whited says the firefighters did the best they could to clean up after themselves. He says Station 1 was built more than 100 years ago and firefighters had only about two days to move out.
He faulted administrators for not having a strong plan for shutting the station down.
On Thursday, Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley said firefighters made a mess before they moved out. She said "the filth was shocking" and showed a lack of discipline, leadership and respect.

Okay, I read the linked article, Cup boards and drawers left open, a mattress on the floor and VHS movies in the bedroom "including Forrest Gump" ...Those savages, it must have been horrible to tour that filth!!! Then the responses are terrible...okay I'm layed off...I better go back and clean my bedroom at the station because it is a public building and I left a movie on the floor...I'll jump right on it.
The only thing I can figure is if I laid off 32 firefighters the refuse department would be gone already. So maybe the mayor is pissed because there is no one left to clean it up. I know that isn't the case and I am with the broom comments as well!
I have to admit that if all that mess is what Paul detailed above then the mayor got off easy. I can think of a lot of other things I would have done in the wake of leaving.
"Due to the economic situation I'm forced to lay off 32 of you guys. Plus close down a fire station. Luckily I was able to find some money to remodel City Hall. Oh and you have 2 days left so could you clean up the Fire Station on your way out the door? Thanks bunches guys and don't forget "Re-Elect McShurley 2010!"
DT you are absolutely right, the article was a joke but the comments left by citizens wow. Glad I don't have to work in that city! Things are definately disturbing in Muncie!!!
