In the Department I belong to give two way radios to all the line offers, and any firefighter that would like to have a two way radio only needs to get pemision from the Chief, and he, or she can purchase their own, and the department will program it for you. When we use the radio, our call sign is our ID number. I must say it works well within our Department. How do other departments feel about the uses of radio's?

In our dept we give portable radios to all member except for junior members. For the most part it works very well. Some people do like to use them like a CB radio and that does get a little anoying and seems unprofessional at times but we are working on it.
Hey Lt. Shane, Thanks again for responding to one of my discussions.
It's good to hear that you have radio's for all the members that are on the
sence of a call. This way everyone knows what's going on. The department i'm
with also has the same type of set up, and we also allow members to buy their
own with the permission of the Chief. Thanks again, and stay safe out there Brother.
Hey W. Scott, Thank you for responding to the discussion.
I have to agree with some of what you said. I beleive all members
should have radio's, mainlly just that everyone knows what going on.
For what you would pay for a one channel radio, compaired to a mult.
channel radio, isn;t that much differant in price. But again thanks for
sharing that information with us. Be safe out there Brother.
On our department only the officers get one that is issued from the chief. We have extras on each truck so that when we get on the fire ground then the nozzle man and tool person has a radio. Other than that our chief does not want anyone else to have one because they have pagers and in the past we have had troubles with people other than officers getting on the radio. This works really good for our department. We have enough radios for the right people on the fire ground.
Hey WRFD 784, Thank you for responding to the discussion.
If what your doing works for your department, that's all that
counts. Thanks again, and be safe out there Brother.
Hey Jake, Yhanks again for responding to yet another one of my
discussions. It sound as if you are working on getting the problem
under control of to much chatter on the radio's. The best thing is to
let the members know, if they abuse the privilege, they loss the privilege.
That's the way most departments handle that problem. Thanks again, and
be safe out there Brother.
Do we have anymore departments that give out two way radios ???
In our department, the Chiefs have mobiles and portables. Each fire truck has a portable. The rescue van has 12 portables. On the Ambulance side, all medical people have portables, plus mobiles in their cars. All interior teams take a portable with them. We rarely have more than 15 firefighters on scene, so there are plenty of portables to go around.
Hey James, Thanks for responding to the discussion. It dose sound as if your
department has it covered, Thanks again, and be safe out there Brother.
IN OUR DEPT.,CHIEF AND LINE OFFICERS GET PORTABLES AND MOBILES WE HAVE RECENTLY STARTED TO PURCHASE THE PAGER/PORTABLE COMBOS--PROGRAMMED WITH CERTAIN CHANNELS-AND STRICT RULES TOO. BUT I MYSELF AS AN OFFICER AM STILL FIGHTING TO GET A MOBILE FOR MY POV--THEY HAVE THEM.....MY PORTABLE HAS 2 CHANNELS--FIRE CONTROL AND OUR TACT CHANNEL--NONE OF THE OTHER CHANNELS--LIKE OUR STATE FIRE CHANNEL--USED SOMETIMES WHEN WE GET MULTIPLE THINGS GOING ON IN THE COUNTY...ETC. BUT THATS JUST THE WAY THINGS ARE.......CHRIS
Hey Chris, Thank you for responding to the discussion. I see that you are
just north of me in North Carolina. I do hope in time things will change for
your department where everyone will have a radio. I feel as if communication
is just as important as accountabillity. Thanks again, be well, and stay safe
out there Brother.
In our department probies are given a pager. FF are given a two way after training, classroom, pratical, and listening to other departments in the county. Officers we have a pair of handhelds ( for IC). also each truck has its own. We are on an analog ( 157.XXX) system so we can geet the radios pretty cheap. But we also SHARE THE CHANNEL WITH S.O. AND LOCAL P.D. Now that get insane at times!
