Grant it, Santa Barbara has had three major wildfires including the Gap Fire, Tea Fire and now the Jesusita Fire. All three fires included visits from our Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The good news is that he is very pro fire department and police department and always finds a way to make sure we get the resources necessary to control the fires that our front country is known for. It's kind of cool to see a movie star devote his time and efforts to help your efforts when they are needed.

Does your governors in your states or territories show this kind of support that creates a media frenzy?

Or is is just California?

All of the elected officials, police and fire chiefs involved with the unified command surround the governor.

News agency photo journalists wear protective masks...

Arnold takes a moment to talk to the troops.

Arnold is orientated by the CalFire Team leader and county fire chiefs using the incident map displayed and used at the daily briefings.

Once state funds were approved and a management team was put into place, more resources such as the DC-10 were made available to assist with suppressing the fires.

Summary: A major part of fire suppression is politics...

Our politicians also like to be seen and photographed. They just like to be seen... OK, yes I do have a fairly low opinion of those people!
the polys walk a fine line in nz and we have a huge amount of armchair critics and left wing pc do gooders luckely we do not have the same scale events like you do
sadly we lost one of our police officers the other week and all of the polys are rattling on about it sad this tragic that yes i agree but they are the ones who dont back the police up when they need it the most which in my humble opinion is before the event. like we say plan for the worst and hope it never happens.
they went to do a drug raid without so much as a teaspoon for protection and now suddnley after a couple of years of debate they finally say they will issue all front line police with tazers after the death im waiting for the pc out cry about that.
And in the words of my father never take a knife to a gunfight son!!!
In the case of that murder you mentioned ( I saw the news), a tazer would have been no better than a tea spoon. Firearms are needed. The crooks are armed, the cops should be armed. You father had the correct saying. Still, if I'm not careful I'll be taking us into another topic.
Hi Tony its a bit of a sad thing really the way the polys work
they are quite happy to let the services run down via budget cuts ect our fire service went thru a huge restructure a while back there was much aggro about it especially from the paid staff cutting benefits ect
the polys got their way
we are lucky that we do not get the fires here that you guys get it would be interesting to see what would happen if we had a magor event something like a volcanic in auckland or a good shake in wellington
if something like that happened we would be spread very thin and given that 3/4 of our ff are vollys the govt response would need to be very clear or really should be clear all ready as i would say half of the volllys would not be able to respond to a prolonged call due to financial constraints on the family i know my customers would understand if i disappeared for a week or 2 but i would be asking who is going to cover my bills ect and that i feel is the quiet issue that they do not want to talk about
I see most politicians as being very self-seeking people. They really only care about themselves. Since it's only really another job, one could ask why we should expect anything else? In a conversation once with a person who admired politicians (well, the ones in his favourite Party anyway) I was told that if I thought they were so bad why didn't I do the job myself. I told him that I couldn't lie well enough... That made the poor bloke even more unhappy!

Politicians live for their current term. Those at the top of the pile probably look to the next term as well - but no further. Why don't they look further than one or two terms? Because they know they can't plan for themselves past that.

Yes, I'm a cynic when it comes to this subject.
Mike,

Must be nice...we don't see our governor supporting us at a level even close to what you Cali guys get.

Also, do I see the word "Tanker" on that BADLOW dropping the pink fire retardant in the photo above? :-)

Take care, brother,

Ben
i agree with you there Tony i had a good laugh i was watching parlament in telly last nite they were voting on amending bills and after the reading there was a vote yays vers nays which any fith grader could of kept a track of yet they still argued and went to count
its a funny thing people moan about the paid ff sitting round yet if they watch what i was looking at there would be a public riot
