Reg Shelby makes a glove with out the elastic rist band. Thats what i use
Leave it to jake haha!

That's kinda similar to my "any helmet that keeps my brain in the skull" on the helmet preference thread lol
As long as whatever you're wearing has the little "this meets the NFPA 1971 standard for stuctural ensemble etc etc" tag in it. I don't see where that would be a problem.

We ran into that with a load of hoods we had bought once. All they had was a tag saying who made it and nothing else. The board consulted an attorney and he suggested everything we use have the NFPA compliant tag in it, and that it's legible as well.
I'd recommend the Pro Techs. Had 1 pair I've worn for 2 yrs in a career dept w/o any issues. They are also what I have been buying for my call dept folks. Everybody seems to love the dexterity. They seem to be as warm in the winter as any other (i'm in Maine) and better in the summer, hold up well, and work great for wildland, extrication as well as structural firefighting.
My whole department use Shelby FDP and we haven't had any problems with them yet.. They hold up really good for the amount abuse they get put through.. I would check in to the Pro tech 8 gloves I had a Sales Rep tell me that there was some issue's with the gloves because they was melting and some firefighter had got burned. Something to do with the material being used. I don't know the whole story so it something to check into..
i have both the shelby fdp's and the american firewear super gloves and i would chose the super gloves every timee over the fdp's
Thanks for all the input everybody!!! It is greatly appreciated!!!! Take care out there.....
send em my way I will make good use of em. lol

Something to think about.

Does your department take on the liability of allowing personnel to use their own personal items, even though they provide your equipment? Many departments, (including mine) provide all PPE, based on our specifications, and do not allow personnel to subsitute their PPE. The liability occurs when someone uses personal equipment which differes from department specs, and gets injured or killed. For example. NFPA 1971 reccommends the design and type of glove needed, based on the cuff interface of the  bunker coat. Some designs meet criteria where a "Gauntlet" style is acceptable, while another should use the "Wristlet" style. Using a personal Gauntlet glove with a coat designed for the Wristlet style, can result in burn injuries to the wearer. The department may be held accountable.

My recommendation is this. Use what the department issues, period. If it appears inferior, or ill fitting, work with your department's administration to effect a change. Sell it to your Chiefs. "These gloves meet this spec, but are safer because... would be more cost effective because they last longer... etc." There are many good gloves on the market, and some have been listed in the replies. Most are personal preference.

For what its worth, my department issues a sleevemate style by Morning Pride (Honeywell). Not the most expensive, but are durable and fairly flexible. Plus, the sleevemate works on both types of cuff styles.

Me and another guy in our dept. uses the Dragonfire gloves and love them!
