What is the policy, guideline, etc. of wearing your department's logo on apparel when off duty? This is more directed towards paid departments although volunteer input is also welcome, because I think volunteer organizations are in some cases a little more open when it comes to wearing department apparel with the mind frame that the volunteers are "always on duty". I understand from a department view that an individual performing an act which could be perceived as detrimental to the department image while wearing the logo and representing the department would raise concern. On the other hand, I have heard individuals who's department allows them (and some that do not) say that it is a method of showing "departmental pride", or "esprit de corps".
Any opinions, or examples of your department's established protocols?
In our department long ago we promoted the wearing of our issued tshirts off duty. The thought was if the citizens see you its good publicity. We went so far as to give special tshirts and hats as safety awards.
Now with that comes the "FEW", the one's who were not born with the since God gave a rock. That was where the action / reaction phase came in. Punishment for doing the non-intelligent things such as cutting off the sleeves and wearing them around town. Going to the bar or even worse the male establishments. Now I know you know those guys would never do it until they got caught or complaints were received.
The punishment was swift and decisive. 3 day to termination. Being on the disciplinary board the solution was easy. Either you have pride in your department and respect for your fellow Firefighters or you leave. Black and white.
There was no secret about the standard. It was as it was.
Your department should just take a stance! If you allow your uniform to be worn off duty then make sure everyone is aware of the penalties of bad behavior.
im on Little River Volunteer Fire Department and we dont have any restrictions on wearing department shirts or hoodies outside of calls. One of our only problems is people who are not on the fire dept. wearing our shirts, many of whom we dont know. But otherwise its almost encouraged to wear them.
