can anyone give me some advice?
What advice would you give me (or other jr's) as a junior firefighter who hopes to become a firefighter/emt when im old enough? How could i best reach these goals? Anything would really be welcome...

work out alot and think about getting your fire science degree along with EMT first . Education and fitness is the key . Learn as much as you can as a Jr. that experience looks good on your resume plus allows you to "network" Good luck on your future career you will love it.

I started out as a junior firefighter at the age os 14. At 43, Im still here doing what I love most. My best advice for you is to get a 4 year degree as soon as possible. Get all the certs you can get with paramedic being is important as it is the trend of the fire service. The most important of all is to get real life experience as there is no substitution for it. We all have seen leadership of people that tested well, had all the certs but was useless out in the real life. Last but most important, look at this as a career & family and not just a job.

Once you're 18, start applying for every fire department you would like to work for; and keep doing it on a regular basis. Re-apply with the same departments over and over again. It won't hurt your chances, it will only help. Don't worry about having enough credentials to compete with everyone else. It sounds counterintuitive but you may be chosen before others who have years of technical education. It happened to me! That said, don't give up the education! It is still your best avenue for success.

Always be willing to learn. Never think you know everything. Be open to more than one way of doing things because other firefighters and departments may offer better ways of doing things. Always ask questions about things you're unsure of. Learn as much as you can and whenever training is available take advantage of it. Learn when to go by the book and when to go off experience. Be active in discussions like here on FFN to learn as much as you can.

I find myself learning all the time. Just because Im old and crusty doesnt mean I can't learn. It's all in your attitude...seems like you have a good one!

We don't have a junior program in our dept. I think if you train and go to calls to help you will reach your goals with no problem

pay attention to all that your learning now... it will come in handy for when you are able to take your fire and ems tests. Take all the advice you can get no matter how simple something seems. Take every training serously no matter how strang it seems. Train like you life depends on it, because some day it might.

well if you realy whant to become a firefighter-emt there should be absolutley nothing to get in your way if you love what you do so just keep training

Pay close attention in training listen to the Senior members and never get mouthy with anyone, then again that could go for anyone new or old. Good Luck Jessica
