It's always easier to ask a question again than search for a topic. I'll offer my usual reply.
Our juniors are junior members, they are not firefighters, they are not issued pagers, they are not issued firefighting PPE, they do not respond to calls. That's just the way I like it, when they are old enough (16 with signed parental approval) they can join as senior members and we'll take it from there.
Dispite the countless times this has been asked I'll answer it anyways.
In my department Jr. FF are are considered full members of the company.
They are issued a pager, full gear, allowed to attend in house training, at 16 the can go to fire school, allowed and company Sog states that must respond to all calls except MVA's. But to do this they must maintain a C Av., and must represent they company in good manner while in public.
If you are not concerned with liability then I guess Jrs. responding to calls doesn't matter...The only thing I can see them doing at a scene is scene support...and NO they should NOT be pulled from school for this....Paul
When I started out as a junior (man that makes me feel old) our Chief had sent a letter to our school Supt. and asked if it were ok for us to carry our pagers to school and respond ONLY when called upon. The school board said they were ok with it and so we did. You talk about embarrasing when it went off during class and everyone stared at you. In my school it wasn't cool to want to be a firefighter. I can only remeber one time I was called out of school for a barn fire. But I was late on several occasions for runs. The OIC just sent in a letter with me to the main office explaining my tardiness.
