NORWICH, Conn. (AP) -- A former Jewett City fire cadet has been sentenced to nine months in prison for taking a fire truck for a joy ride.
Eighteen-year-old Matthew Stevens was sentenced Wednesday. Police say he took the $700,000 fire engine for a ride last Aug. 25.
Police say that Stevens entered the firehouse in his firefighter gear, hopped into the truck and raced through Griswold and Canterbury with lights flashing and the siren wailing.
Police say Stevens then ditched the truck in Canterbury.
Fire officials say Stevens had been kicked out of the department three months earlier for an arrest on domestic charges.
