Have companies gotten rid of their hand drawn's? You just don't see them around like you did twenty years ago. If so, Why?

We don't have ours, but I know where one of our old ones is located. I am in Michigan, and our old hand tub is in Maine. I try to go out once a year for the annual parade to check it out and say hello. I would LOVE the chance to get it back home, but not real likely. I can honestly say that the group who has it take extremely good care of it.

I can see why you would want it back! Real nice piece. What is the story behind it's relocation if you don't mind me asking?
Sorry to be late getting back to you, I surf a lot, and didn't check my groups. Our city back in the day sold it when they bought new steamers, and it made its way up the east coast (south to north) until it ended up in Maine. I think I have the whole story somewhere, but I would have to look it up. I found it by accident through a gentleman who had asked me about our department history, only to have him make me aware of its location, rather ironic.
Here are a couple of Pictures of a few pieces that can be seen at the Pennsylvania State Fire Museum in Harrisburg PA. Which if your ever in the area it's worth the hour or two to visit.

I was doing a little research with a local historian last evening and we came across this photo. AS far as he knows this is the only evidence of this hand pumper. The picture was taken in front of the first engine house and if you look carefully there is a truck in the background that says Bernville on the front.
Hi Asst.29 what year is that steamer we have one and its 1894 Am. lafrance but we have the push bell in the front im trying to up load them on here but having no luck and i see it say hope #2 on it well ours is hope steam #1
At risk of shoving mynose in here... a GREAT resource isa website called Handtub Junction which has lots of info on Hand tub muster operations New England Veterans League and other orgs. They even have a Database which has a Lots of info ON Handtibs Known to have existed and those That still exist in Museums, as well as activly pumped at these hand tub events that cover New England, NY , NJ , pa, Ohio, etc... The website has an active listing and they have done a fantastic job, Name, Maker, date when known Location etc.. in a searchable list
start at http://www.handtubs.com/

More then likely Protection 2 was purchased and is in Private hands and was refurbed so it can be pumped in the vet's league which has 25 or 30 various classed tubs that are pumped for distance at these Musters, hence the chances of it returning to Michigan a quick look at the data base showed 6 or 7 Protection engines and a protection 1 (no 2)so that might have been "added" at refurb, Only One protection hailed from Michigan and it was said to be Ann Arbor's rig Sound right Jeff? :)
wow, Given the size of the brakes (handles) This was one early designed tub, Many rigs this size were soon out classed By squirrel tails that had Brakes That folded up and allowed 3 times the manpower You could put on this machine manyof these rigs ended up in Hospitals or similar "campus settings"... squirreltails became popular in the 1790's Not to say this rig wasnt a later model as far as the rig in the backround goes couldit be a later model hose wagon Chief? The frontpanel/nameplate seems a bit "extra" for a hand drawn truck.. Below is a photo of my Vollie departments 1883 Hand drawn truck
which was designed to be Light and "airey" as you can see.. The Lantern (Big one) is the centerpiece of the company's trophy cabinet.... Obviously Your print may show more then what we can see here, Butitseems like a pretty big rig to be handdrawn..

I have gotten some feed back from a few older members and they speak only from second hand knowledge but anyhow they claim that what you see in the background of the picture is and old Gruber wagon. Which were made approximately 4miles outside of town. But to be honest nobody knows for sure.
The "Protection 2" that they have in York Maine (our old one) was originally "Protection 2" here in Adrian. We had Alert Company 1, Hook & Ladder Company 1, and Protection 2 here in town. I don't know if the name changed as it moved around or not, but the name now is the same as it was originally. I think it has stayed that way, because when I visited and looked at it, it's condition seemed old and original. However, I am by no means a expert, so it could have been re-done.
